Thread: Does your Church preach the Gospel?

    Does your Church preach the Gospel?

    Strange question for a Sunday? Maybe, but I come across this yesterday (and yes it's satire) and I thought I'd ask.

    Study: 84% Of Christians Show No Symptoms Of Following Jesus | The Babylon Bee

    The article starts: "U.S.—An alarming report released on Wednesday indicates that 84% of Americans who identify as Christians show no symptoms of actually following Jesus." (there is often a lot of truth in satire).

    I'd better say what I think are the necessary points of the Gospel first because I've had people say they hear the Gospel when they actually don't hear anything like this:

    1. We are all sinners;
    2. Sin separates us from God;
    3. We can never be good enough in ourselves to change this; and
    4. As a result of our sin, unless someone does something about it, we're all going to hell.
    5. But God has done something about it;
    6. Because of His love for the world He sent his Son Jesus to die on the cross;
    7. On the cross Jesus paid the price for our sin;
    8. So now if we repent of our sin and believe in the Lord Jesus Christ;
    9. We can receive forgiveness for our sin; become a child of God being "born again"; and we will go to heaven.

    Now I don't want to get into a discussion about the above points, unless there is something totally wrong, but if we want to bring it to a minimum, the Gospel is that we're sinners and we need to repent.

    Jesus said of Himself "Thus it is written, that the Christ would suffer and rise again from the dead the third day, and that repentance for forgiveness of sins would be proclaimed in His name to all the nations". (Luke 24:46).

    So, does your Church proclaim "repentance for forgiveness of sins", or as I would say, preach the Gospel?

    No. Sadly I haven't heard the above said in my church for several years.

    Use God's gift of Free Will to find a new church unless has God foreordained you to be in this church and suffer

    That's the plan. I've been there 47 years and it has basically been my only church. It was a great church but then it slowly began to die. I believe I had to stay there and gracefully point that out. I've been doing it for years. I just have to see where God leads.

    Pretty much.

    That's a proclamation primarily for the lost. Our small church is comprised of committed believers. We go through the Bible book by book, verse by verse and if the subject of repentance is where we are in our study, we'll major on that for awhile, but we don't go out of our way to preach on a topic not covered by the Scriptures we're in. Right now we're in Romans 12.

    The implicit is that the church is visited by sinners regularly so that such a proclamation becomes meaningful. Which is in and of itself a sign of a sound church. It's easier if the church is large rather than small of course. Unless they do outreach regularly.

    If the church were doing what we are called to do we wouldn't be "visited by sinners regularly". We would be doing the outreach that you mentioned. The Sunday service is supposed to be a time of re-charging, learning and growing and also training for the saints of God. Then they are supposed to take the gospel to the lost as they go about their week.

    Not saying that an occasional sinner would'nt wander in, but that the church is backwards. People think if they invite an unbeliever to Sunday church service, then they are doing their part and it is up to the pastor or evangelist to present the gospel message. It is the pastor's and evangelist's job to equip the saints for the work of the ministry.
