    Two Kinds of Righteousness?

We see that in the Bible, people are referred to as "righteous", particularly in the OT. What does this mean, in terms of and comparison to the "righteousness of Christ?"

For example, the 10 "righteous" that were sought in Sodom, where the impliction that only Lots family met that standard of righteousness.

Also, David had an intimacy with the Lord, that arguably too few regenerated Christian's seem to have, as a man after Gods heart.

Three kinds. Actual (by works), imputed (by decree), imparted (by spiritual birth)

Can you expound on the differences between the "spiritual birth" and "decree" version?

Abraham was righteous by faith though he was not born again. On accord of his faith he was imputed righteousness by decree.

We are righteous by faith and have righteousness imputed to us by decree. But God takes this one step further by giving new birth to us, creating a new creature in Christ in us that is righteous like he is. It cannot sin and if we sin it's because we live according to the flesh, our carnal selves.

Rom 5:10 For if when we were enemies we were reconciled to God through the death of His Son, much more, having been reconciled, we shall be saved by His life.

Rom 5:18 Therefore, as through one man’s offense judgment came to all men, resulting in condemnation, even so through one Man’s righteous act the free gift came to all men, resulting in justification of life.

Rom 8:10 And if Christ is in you, the body is dead because of sin, but the Spirit is life because of righteousness.

Gal 3:21 Is the law then against the promises of God? Certainly not! For if there had been a law given which could have given life, truly righteousness would have been by the law.

2 Cor 5:4 For we who are in this tent groan, being burdened, not because we want to be unclothed, but further clothed, that mortality may be swallowed up by life.

And when that life has taken completely over then we are only that new creature and we are only righteous. By a life that can only produce righteousness throughout eternity.

Good post! This is the difference in the aspect of the POWER of the gospel. Some go no further than to accept by faith the decree of righteousness cloaking their 'dirty soul'' like the robe placed on the Prodigal son. But we know he did not stay that way...he returned in repentance which points to change that would have been demonstrated from that moment on....

The gospel EMPOWERS us through the new birth and indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit to both be a reborn righteous spirit being AND to progress in that righteous spirit leading us into transformed righteous thought and action...

The prodigal son repented but I'm not sure how much the parable says about the new birth. The OT saints repented too, without being born again. According to Heb 11 they all waited for the fulfillment of the promise but had to wait, and were only perfected along with us. The new birth wasn't released until with the resurrection of Christ.

Yea...true...I was thinking more of an analogy comparison....God did not intend to merely robe over our sin....that WAS the OT faith....NT faith He intended we be washed inside and out...
