Thread: Anyone know the source of Edward's Quote?

    Anyone know the source of Edward's Quote?

    In my reading I came across a quote attributed to Jonathan Edwards, "Reprobate infants are vipers of vengeance, which Jehovah will hold over hell in the tongs of his wrath until they turn and spit venom in his face...."

    I do not remember now where I read it, ... I just scribbled the quote down on my desk blotter/calendar ... but I would like to verify the accuracy of it.

    So, can anyone help with verifying the source?

    I googled it. I found it attributed to Edward's sermon "The Eternity of Hell's Torments".

    That's a pretty severe quote and it piqued my curiosity. I also saw where it was attributed to Edwards in that sermon but then I found this...scroll down to post #135 and keep reading, apparently he never said it:

    As for "reprobate infants," I do know a guy who thinks all babies who die go to hell. He says that's why Satan is such a proponent of abortion. It helps fill hell with newcomers. I think his belief is pretty common among hyper-Calvinists. Can you imagine a pastor telling a new mother who just lost her baby that the child is in hell? I cannot.

    I cant recall any serious poster anywhere who believed that. Some said that if God chose to pass by infants including fetuses and send them to hell then that was his choice but not that every infant goes to hell because it wasnt regenerated into a believer. That isnt Calvinism.

    The same type of quote is often attributed to John Calvin but cant be found in his written works. It is more likely an extrapolation of what hardcore Calvinists believe or should believe. Calvin was pretty straightforward but not quite that blatant.

    But isn't that the only consequence of the Colonel's statement that:

    believe = saved
    disbelieve = not saved

    ?

    Perhaps that's why we've had a softening of the free-will Gospel message over the last four decades. Telling a group of free standing 20ish year olds that they are under the wrath of God and that as sinners they, of themselves, of their own choise, must repent and believe or go to hell is one thing; but when they pair off, marry and have children, and unfortunatley there are miscarrages and some even die young the "they (the babies), of themselves, of their own choise, must repent and believe or go to hell" message becomes a burden, to those receiving it and so to the preacher.
