Several years ago when dd was looking for a church she said it was just like going to the circus, the things that went on.

As far as I can tell there's nothing that's technically wrong about any of the three clips in the first video. There's nothing that's done that's wrong and there's nothing that's said that's wrong. People might not like it and I'm wondering where they were going with that dollar bill thing but the clip ends there.

This boils down to "how do I feeeeeel about what I saw and heard in the clips" and "what do I assume that it was supposed to mean".

Which leads us to these words by Jesus :

John 7:24 Do not judge according to appearance, but judge with righteous judgment

This is what anti-Charismatics commonly do, they point at something involving culture that they don't understand and they judge it according to how it appears to them. Then you are supposed to be emoted by it all. Just like the news media expects you to be these days.

we're talking about the time when the Church, the redeemed of God, those bought by the sacrifice of God's only begotten Son on the cross, gather to worship their God, their Lord, their Saviour, the creator of heaven and earth.

I was searching for something and came across this on britannicia.

"As the large popular Protestant denominations became the churches of the upper-middle class, people of limited means began to feel out of place. They yearned to return to a "heart religion" that would satisfy their spiritual desires and their emotional, psychological, and physical needs."

People have real spiritual needs, but they're provided entertainment that goes to satisfy emotional needs, and some being poor (and others just greedy) they lap up the prosperity doctrine and wof rhetoric.

And some have perfect doctrine, dry and religious liturgy and think about their boyfriend while their wife is sitting next to them in the pew.

Calvinists are the the "cancel culture warriors" of today's church. If they don't like it they want it removed from the church. Some things they cancel out need to be removed from God's church for sure. But when they rip out whole chapters of the Bible and refuse to practice what every church needs to practice then we have big problems. Either they completely ignore the Gifts or build an argument against them that is in itself a Bible butchering heresy.

I was saved in the early 70s (which was a good time to be saved), but there was also a lot of bad stuff. People going around "prophesying" that people would marry other people and other such like junk. Yes we had prophesy and tongues during our services (which we haven't had for decades) but they got out of order and we had to bring in controls to handle that.

Paul writes the Corinthians because they too were out of order.

There are lines that should never be crossed. And it would seem to me that some reformed people, being a bit more conservative, and seeing the excesses in the Charismatics including some emotional hype, have decided that the best way is to stay a safe distance away from the line, that way you can't cross it.

Elsewhere Colonel suggested I do a study of the gifts, and another elsewhere (in the same thread) said that "today's sermon in my church was about the holy spirit, the baptism in the holy spirit, being filled by the holy spirit, and speaking in tongues". If the Colonel's sermon was a proper exegesis of the relevant scriptures it would have been useful for me to listen to and learn from. One of the other concerns of the reformed is that some Charismatics seem to cherry pick scriptures; quote them out of context; mix in the speaker's experiences; and call that "Biblical". (Sorry, I'm biased here. My last pastor put out a book which he insists all pastors in our denomination read, and in it there are 29 scriptures (1 completely out of context - I haven't checked the rest) but we see "I" used over 700 times. It's about him, not scripture).

I'm pretty sure things won't ever change much. We're always going to have those who want to hang back lest we go to far, and others willing to forge ahead knowing there will be messes and damage to tidy up. And (allegorically speaking) there will be those who want to ensure that the paperwork is always in order, and those who don't care much for paperwork.

I'm glad God is full of grace.

I didn't say that I was the one who preached that sermon. I have found that many people agree with me that the HSB and the gifts aren't mentioned that often in sermons so it was refreshing to hear a sermon about that in our church yesterday. I think it's the second time I've heard the HSB being mentioned specifically in about 5 years, in probably 200 sunday meetings.
