It's appealing to their emotions to see 'Jesus' appearing to the natives. The Mormons are comforted and to them it proves their 'faith'

So that is an actual Mormon teaching, that Jesus appeared to native Americans before the first Christians arrived in the Americas ?

Yes...they believed some of the Indians are actually Israelites who left in 600BC

I suppose that's why Mormonism became popular in the US, the book of Mormon made the Americas a central religious arena, both in the past and also in the future. I'm thinking that the narrative that many American Christians believe in that has giants travel from the Canaan area to the US to establish themselves there several thousand years ago works the same way.

I always wonder about this kind of thing. What is the point of even believing that? Why is that important to them so that they would just come up with something like that?
