If the roo was aggressive and attacked then that would be different but the roo was defensive because of the dog.
Why are they upset? What else could he have done to save the dog and himself? After the roo let the dog go it did keep coming towards the guy.

Seems to me the punch broke the confrontation and even the kangaroo went away unharmed. There's more info in this article:

It really didn't look like he needed to punch him to me. The kangaroo had let go.

This is the sort of thing I would of done when younger especially when you are with friends acting for the camera.
In reality you wouldn't hit it unless it came at you aggressively

The man works at a zoo and is comfortable with animals and he has the training to know how to avoid roo attack.
IMO he was playing for the camera and there was no necessity to hit the roo. He could easily have backed away and to my laymans view he was not in danger.

I saw this clip on the news...TT, do people still box kangaroos for fun? Are the kangaroos trained to do this and isn't there an element of danger because as you said they could really hurt you?

There is always the possibility of getting hurt but they are not wild kangaroos they have been trained and use to performing.
Our biggest ones are called red kangaroos see above pic on comment 15...they could inflict serious damage but I don't think they used reds as they are more unpredictable.

You can't do that now as it's against the law and the animal society will go into meltdown

This I say therefore, and testify in the Lord, that ye henceforth walk not as other Gentiles walk, in the vanity (futility) of their mind, having the understanding darkened...
    (Ephesians 4:17-18)

Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly...
    (Psalm 1)
