What about the guy who stands in line and pays his hundred dollars to hear what the prophets will say over him at the prophetic conference.
Later on when this fellow is back at home he begins to pour over the transcript of each prophecy that he received from the prophets.
The first prophet shared how the Lord was leading him to write a book.
The second told him that the Lord had given him a ministry to children, and the third proclaimed an evangelistic calling.
He was further astounded to read how the Lord wants him to go into business, and his ministry will be to raise money for the church.
The recipient of these multiple prophetic words is confused. Could it be that the Lord has called him to be all of these?

What is going on here? Do you think that the picture I am painting seems so unreal?
I cannot imagine how many lives have had to be pieced back together that have been torn apart by prophets who spoke their own mindsets and desires on God's people.
Is a prophet who is called to this office in his own eyes, and gives a believer a word out of their own ideas of what a person should do and misses it, really called of God?
It would seem to me that many of todays prophets "give a word" depending on what the person looks like as the prophet categorizes them and asses what they thought God was saying to them. The prophetic ministry is no game and I fear that many so called prophets have failed to understand the responsibility and the seriousness of what it really means to be called by God to be a prophet. Folks, peoples lives are at stake, and those in the prophetic ministry will give an account to God. Even the false ones.

A prophet who speaks on behalf of God and thinks it is no big deal if he misses it is greatly mistaken. People are going to base their lives on the prophetic words that they hear. Even the false ones because of a lack of spiritual maturity and accountability to judge the word correctly with fellow believers.

Think about the time David was at Keilah over in 1 Samuel 23:9-12.

9 When David knew that Saul plotted evil
against him, he said to Abiathar the priest,
    "Bring the ephod here."

10 Then David said, "O Lord God of Israel,
Your servant has certainly heard that Saul seeks
to come to Keilah to destroy the city for my sake.

11 Will the men of Keilah deliver me into his hand?
Will Saul come down, as Your servant has heard?
O Lord God of Israel, I pray, tell Your servant."
And the Lord said, "He will come down."

12 Then David said, "Will the men of Keilah
deliver me and my men into the hand of Saul?"
And the Lord said, "They will deliver you."

Now what if Abiathar missed it? What if he told David that everything was going to be ok? I tell you what would have happened.
David and his men would have stayed put and Saul would have slaughtered them at Keilah.

I believe a genuine prophet understands the seriousness and the responsibility that he has in the lives that God places in his hands.

Speaking of genuine prophets, they have an orientation mostly to believers. While they can on occasion speak forth a decree to someone outside of Christ, this is not the norm and falls into the category of the evangelist. Were all familiar with the scripture in Ephesians 4:11-12...

11 And He Himself gave some to be apostles,
some prophets, some evangelists, and some
    pastors and teachers.

12 for the equipping of the saints for the work of
ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ;"

The prophetic ministry was given for the equipping of the saints.

Show me a real prophet and I will show you someone whose life has been broken and built up many times.
You will see in that person a character that has compassion. They cannot handle unrighteousness.
They cannot handle seeing someone in the Church downtrodden and ignored.
If you ask them, "What burns in you?" They will reply...

"I desire to see the broken hearted healed and I desire
to see every believer finding their place in the church
    and functioning in it."

They are the ones saying, "You can do it. You can break free.
You have a place in the body of Christ. Jesus is there for you."
If you put God First, you have Him at Last.
