"love the sinner but hate the sin" some thoughts

    Interesting

Why is it that we are comfortable with evangelical clichés about God "loving the sinner but hating the sin," when within the first fifty psalms alone there are fourteen passages where God is explicitly said to hate the sinner, or to be angry with the sinner, or the like? I am not for a moment suggesting there is no truth at all in the cliché....

Even so, after all caveats have been entered, the distance between our perception of where the problem lies and the perceptions of the biblical writers is one of the most sobering considerations for those who take the Bible seriously. It is one more indication that we have given ourselves to thinking great thoughts about human beings and small thoughts about God. (emphasis mine)

Some of those worn, dry and crunchy church slogans need to stay on bumper stickers and church marquee's. Of course we are to love sinners. As Paul said to Corinth, "...for such were some of you". So why is there tension between loving someone as opposed to the way they live? What, just because I love a vile sinner someone thinks I condone their life in sin? Strange theology on the backside of that little cliche'.

God is love that is why he loves sinners even when they reject him

    How do you understand

-Leviticus 20:23 You must not live according to the customs of the nations I am going to drive out before you. Because they did all these things, I abhorred them.
-Leviticus 26:30 I will destroy your high places, cut down your incense altars and pile your dead bodies on the lifeless forms of your idols, and I will abhor you.
-Deuteronomy 18:12 Anyone who does these things is detestable to the LORD; because of these same detestable practices the LORD your God will drive out those nations before you.
-Deuteronomy 25:16 For the Lord your God detests anyone who does these things, anyone who deals dishonestly.
-Psalm 5:4-6 For you are not a God who is pleased with wickedness; with you, evil people are not welcome. The arrogant cannot stand in your presence. You hate all who do wrong; you destroy those who tell lies. The bloodthirsty and deceitful you, LORD, detest.
-Psalm 11:5 The LORD examines the righteous, but the wicked, those who love violence, he hates with a passion.
-Proverbs 3:32-33 For the LORD detests the perverse but takes the upright into his confidence.
The LORD's curse is on the house of the wicked, but he blesses the home of the righteous.
-Proverbs 16:5 The LORD detests all the proud of heart.
-Jeremiah 12:8 My inheritance has become to me like a lion in the forest. She roars at me; therefore I hate her.
-Hosea 9:15 Because of all their wickedness in Gilgal, I hated them there.
Because of their sinful deeds, I will drive them out of my house.
I will no longer love them; all their leaders are rebellious.
-Malachi 1:2-3 "I have loved you," says the LORD. "But you ask, 'How have you loved us?' "Was not Esau Jacob's brother?" declares the LORD. "Yet I have loved Jacob, but Esau I have hated, and I have turned his hill country into a wasteland and left his inheritance to the desert jackals."
-Romans 9:13 Just as it is written: "Jacob I loved, but Esau I hated."
-Titus 1:16 They claim to know God, but by their actions they deny him. They are detestable, disobedient and unfit for doing anything good.

Revelation of God grew over time that is why we have the New Covenant - Jesus came to reveal the Father's love
Jesus let the adulterous woman go free when she deserved to be stoned - Every scripture that mentions hate must be understood in the context that God is love or you will get bad doctrine

Look how Jesus rebuke his own apostles

v55 - But He turned and rebuked them, and said, "You do not know what manner of spirit you are of.

Luk 9:52 and sent messengers before His face. And as they went, they entered a village of the Samaritans, to prepare for Him.
Luk 9:53 But they did not receive Him, because His face was set for the journey to Jerusalem.
Luk 9:54 And when His disciples James and John saw this, they said, "Lord, do You want us to command fire to come down from heaven and consume them, just as Elijah did?"
Luk 9:55 But He turned and rebuked them, and said, "You do not know what manner of spirit you are of.
Luk 9:56 For the Son of Man did not come to destroy men's lives but to save them." And they went to another village.

And was built upon what was already known. God's love has been known since Gen 4.

We have the new covenant because as had been demonstrated by the first men are unable to please God

Do you understand that He didn't have the authority to decide she should die? Do you understand that the hypocrisy of those who brought her to Him had be dealt with too? He still hates it TT, every time you lust God sees that as adultery.

Jesus' disciples wanted to destroy people who didn't want to receive Him and Jesus said "No". Jesus came to save and He did that through His death and resurrection. Yes we are told God is love (in context btw), but that doesn't change the fact that there are things and people He tells us He hates.
