Thread: The 10 Commandments in the New Testament

  1. #31

    Colossians 2:16-23 (NASB)
    (16) Therefore no one is to act as your judge in regard to food or drink or in respect to a festival or a new moon or a Sabbath day--
    (17) things which are a mere shadow of what is to come; but the substance belongs to Christ.
    (18) Let no one keep defrauding you of your prize by delighting in self-abasement and the worship of the angels, taking his stand on visions he has seen, inflated without cause by his fleshly mind,
    (19) and not holding fast to the head, from whom the entire body, being supplied and held together by the joints and ligaments, grows with a growth which is from God.
    (20) If you have died with Christ to the elementary principles of the world, why, as if you were living in the world, do you submit yourself to decrees, such as,
    (21) "Do not handle, do not taste, do not touch!"
    (22) (which all refer to things destined to perish with use)--in accordance with the commandments and teachings of men?
    (23) These are matters which have, to be sure, the appearance of wisdom in self-made religion and self-abasement and severe treatment of the body, but are of no value against fleshly indulgence.

    Colossians 2:16-23
    (AMP,)
    (16) Therefore let no one sit in judgment on you in matters of food and drink, or with regard to a feast day or a New Moon or a Sabbath.
    (17) Such [things] are only the shadow of things that are to come, and they have only a symbolic value. But the reality (the substance, the solid fact of what is foreshadowed, the body of it) belongs to Christ.
    (18) Let no one defraud you by acting as an umpire and declaring you unworthy and disqualifying you for the prize, insisting on self-abasement and worship of angels, taking his stand on visions [he claims] he has seen, vainly puffed up by his sensuous notions and inflated by his unspiritual thoughts and fleshly conceit,
    (19) And not holding fast to the Head, from Whom the entire body, supplied and knit together by means of its joints and ligaments, grows with a growth that is from God.
    (20) If then you have died with Christ to material ways of looking at things and have escaped from the world's crude and elemental notions and teachings of externalism, why do you live as if you still belong to the world? [Why do you submit to rules and regulations?--such as]
    (21) Do not handle [this], Do not taste [that], Do not even touch [them],
    (22) Referring to things all of which perish with being used. To do this is to follow human precepts and doctrines. [Isa. 29:13.]
    (23) Such [practices] have indeed the outward appearance [that popularly passes] for wisdom, in promoting self-imposed rigor of devotion and delight in self-humiliation and severity of discipline of the body, but they are of no value in checking the indulgence of the flesh (the lower nature). [Instead, they do not honor God but serve only to indulge the flesh.]

This I say therefore, and testify in the Lord, that ye henceforth walk not as other Gentiles walk, in the vanity (futility) of their mind, having the understanding darkened...
    (Ephesians 4:17-18)

Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly...
    (Psalm 1)

Some people seem to view the Sabbath as a day of the week thing. While it's true that the Sabbath was sundown Friday to sundown Saturday, it's just as important HOW it was observed. None of these "keep the Sabbath" people truly abide by the requirements of the law regarding the Sabbath.

    Jew and Greek,

re: "Some people seem to view the Sabbath as a day of the week thing."

Because that is what it is - the 7th day of the week.

    What is your point?

My point is that in addition to observing Sabbath from sundown Friday to sundown Saturday, you had to offer two lambs that were one year old without defect, along with a drink offering and a grain offering of two-tenths of an ephah of the finest flour mixed with olive oil. (Numb. 28:9) Does anybody do that on the Sabbath? You couldn't do any work at all, not even watering the lawn or changing a flat. You couldn't kindle a fire. You couldn't travel more than a certain distance (2,000 cubits). No business transactions, which would include gassing up your car on the way to church. The Sabbath was about a lot more than the right 24 hour time frame. It was about strict observation of the requirements of the Law, and if you violated it you were to be executed. I've never heard anybody claim that we should follow all of this today. They just want to emphasize the Saturday thing.
