Thread: Is America still a Christian nation?

Is America still a Christian nation?

I posted a meme on our facebook page and a discussion ensued but it was this post that surprised me:

    I disagree with the meme.. I don't think we're a Christian nation.
    That ship sailed

So now I'm curious, do you believe that we're still a Christian nation or not?

Were we really ever in the recent past? I really don't think so. Maybe a Christian 'professing' nation, but not a Christian nation as in people that are 'really' saved. I think people confuse morality with being a Christian. Lots of moral people in times past moreso like the '50s, etc, but that's just how they were raised. That doesn't necessarily translate into 'Christian'

Maybe Christian in the sense that Christianity was honored throughout society. In the past, or during time periods in the past.

Pretty much what I was going to say. If anything, we are a backslidden nation at best. Yet, many havent “frontslid”.

Many on that Day will say Lord, Lord....

Good point. It definitely isn't Christian friendly now.

I can't say that Norway is either. The monarchy is, actually. The constitution still says that the Norwegian king shall adhere to the Lutheran faith. Our current 81 year old king is a personal Christian. I don't think any of his children qualify, one of them is in fact a witch. So that small glimpse of Christianity in the institution of the monarchy may be fading away entirely.

I read in history about how Sweden was the key nation that saved Europe militarily from being overrun by Catholicism. Way Norway in the mix allied with Sweden?

We were ruled by Denmark from 1537 to 1814.

The Declaration of Independence was signed by 15 freemasons as well as the Constitution being signed by another 28 members of the Masonic lodge.
It is believed that George Washington, Benjamin Franklin, and John Hancock were Masons.
Washington D.C. has many Masonic statues, symbols, and writings built into the fabric of the inner city structures.
There is no doubt that early America was influenced by the Masonic lodge which has no roots in Christianity.

In my mind, the best that can be said is that we are (and have been) a nation whose people aspire to be Christ-like. Given our history of slavery, Native American genocide, and imperialistic wars of aggression, we have clearly fallen short.

Thanks to our doctrine of separation of church and state, we remain a nation in which Christians can live and practice their faith.
