Yeah, I remember. I actually ended up debating Revkev and (gasp!) defending Rick Warren against RevKev's statements about the book. I agreed with Kev that the book was not a great book but I also believed that Revkev's criticisms were inaccurate. If I remember, he, like most of Warren's critics at the time, focused on the "New Age" and "Universalist" angel which I did not see in the book.

If I recall there was also the angle of Ecumenism where Warren was getting signed documents from denominations to come together with the RCC as a whole. He was trying to get a big movement started to which Charles Colson was onboard with and co-promoting. This was circa 2006.

That may have been the New Age orientation that many objected to.

The problem with RW is that he tries to please everybody, and when you do that you end up offending people from every theological perspective. Yes, he embraces TULIP, but at the same time he reaches out to the RCC who are devils according to the Reformed crowd. He appeared on TED Talks and gave a motivational speech that went over well with the crowd but there was no presentation of the gospel which seemed like a squandered opportunity to Evangelicals. He built his church employing market driven church principles ala the Seeker movement. That comes across as watering down the gospel to many believers. I actually like the guy just like I like Joel Osteen, but I can understand why so many rag on him.

I think you summed it up nicely without getting into unnecessarily harsh assessment.

You could say that RW has a bridge-building emphasis, more than many. This has its advantages and disadvantages.

There are many ways to try and reach people, even those you disagree with strongly. E.g., Ravi Zacharias has appeared at the Mormon church as part of his way to reach out, while letting them know their differences.

PEOPLE DO CHURCH DIFFERENTLY because they feel LED differently. I say, cut em slack.

Osteen attracts people like my Bro-in-law, who wouldn't listen to a traditional sermon, but something in Joels approach reached him. And my wife and I were there to do the rest of the work to pull him into the Kingdom.

Yes, I wish Joel and RW would make things more clear and firm regarding some of the more critical truths, but Im not gonna call em a Devils Disciple for it.

BTW, Leighton Flowers did an analysis on RW and came to the same conclusion you state. Too people pleasing toward Piper, and not really operating in theological precision.

You raise some very good points here.

I have seldom listened to Joel Osteen (though I admired his father). But I do remember a time I was feeling burdened and discouraged and found him by accident while flipping through the different Christian TV stations. Stopped to listen to him and felt like the man was speaking directly into my situation. Was quite encouraged afterwards.

I have hardly watched him since and probably could not live off of a constant diet of Joel Osteen sermons but I just figured, like Fred Price often said about himself, "he is not for EVERYONE". I personally do better with old classic Fred Price, Kenneth E. Hagin, and Derek Prince teachings. The only modern day ministers I can get a regular diet from is Keith Moore. But, I do not doubt the calling of men like Joel Osteen. Just hope he will refrain from doing TV interviews on secular stations where he is asked tough questions that he is not bold enough yet to answer from a Biblical view.

RW on the other hand, I would NEVER recommend anything by him. Would encourage people to stay away from his fatalistic PPD stuff (and seeker-sensitive stuff that has harmed numerous churches). But it is problematic when people accuse him of promoting teaches that he does not promote.
