The Unlikely Endurance of Christian Rock
Interesting article! Especially coming from The New Yorker...
https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2...christian-rock
...Many historians trace the birth of Christian rock to the release, in 1969, of "Upon This Rock." It was an inventive concept album, by turns fierce and sweet, that was the work of a stubborn visionary named Larry Norman—the founding father of Christian rock. Norman, who died in relative obscurity, in 2008, has often been viewed as a tragic figure: a gifted and quirky musician who inspired a generation while alienating his peers and, at times, his fans. In "Why Should the Devil Have All the Good Music?," the first biography of Norman, Gregory Alan Thornbury tells a more triumphant story, portraying Norman as a genius and a prophet, clear-eyed in his criticism of what he sometimes called "the apostate church."...
...By the late sixties, when Norman emerged, the rise of rock had already inspired what Tom Wolfe once called "one of the most extraordinary religious fevers of all time"—the hippie movement, with its eagerness to remake society. Wolfe saw this as a faith-based enterprise, and many of its participants would have agreed; their dominant theology was not atheism but mysticism, in its many forms. (In 1967, one popular evangelist warned young Christians to shun "the gospel of LSD.") A small band of enterprising pastors, many in California, sought to convince the hippies that Christianity could be every bit as transformative as its more exotic counterparts. Arthur Blessitt, the self-proclaimed Minister of Sunset Strip, mimicked the conspiratorial patter of an eager drug buddy: "If you really want to get turned on, I mean, man, where the trip's heavy, just pray to Jesus. He'll turn you on to the ultimate trip." Blessitt and others found surprising success, setting up storefront ministries that inspired a nationwide wave of Jesus-fuelled coffee shops and Christian group houses, which tended to be communal but not, for obvious reasons, coed. This decentralized revival became known as the Jesus Movement, and its participants as Jesus People—or, less delicately, as Jesus Freaks....

I was kind of surprised that they didn't mention Mylon Le Fever.
Although I don't suppose he was connected to Calvary Chapel / Vinyard et al. ??
.
This I say therefore, and testify in the Lord, that ye henceforth walk not as other Gentiles walk, in the vanity (futility) of their mind, having the understanding darkened...
(Ephesians 4:17-18)
Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly...

I think that has only been relatively recently. I don't think it was when he was with Broken Heart.

Mylon came out of Mt Paran Church of God in Atlanta in his early days (I’m a huge fan). When he almost died of a heart attack he had a “chance” encounter with Kenneth and Gloria that prayed for his healing. By then, Mylon knew to lay down his rockin’ for Jesus lifestyle, pursued his speaking ministry under the Copelands.

Yeah, I was going to say he came out of the COG. His whole family were singers, the LeFevers and went to Mt Paran (originally Hemphill Ave COG).
His story about learning about healing and finally meeting Gloria and Kenneth is quite extraordinary. One part I think remember correctly was he was in a non Christian book store and saw Kenneth Hagin's 'God's Medicine' I believe it was on one of the shelves. He takes it to the counter or something and the lady said it wasn't one of theirs that he could have it or something along those lines. And then something about being on a beach and a person walks by him with a healing book, may have been Osborne's 'Healing the Sick', and later found out it was Gloria that was carrying it. Just a lot of little divine appointments like that.

I have a pastor friend that has had Mylon in to speak a few times over the years. It’s not a big church so I was freaked to hear Mylon was speaking just 10 miles down the road but I had to preach in my own church. I have always had a love and respect for him.

One weird little thing about Mylon. Well not him, but...well, not sure what to call it. lol.
Anyway, one of my favorite rock groups back in the day was Ten Years After with Alvin Lee. I guess I was 16, 17, a rocker myself and not saved. So Alvin Lee (the guitar player) decided to do a solo album and he actually did it with Mylon Levefre. The cover is Alvin and Mylon walking down a tree covered road.
Anyway, it was just weird years later that I was saved and Mylon was saved and I had that album when I wasn't saved and he wasn't saved. lol.
That's Mylon on the left. Alvin died a couple of years ago.
