    It is finished

When did Jesus finish his work here on Earth ? When was the foundation of our salvation finished ?

There are many "finishes" mentioned. Notice that all of them are found in the gospel of John. Here is one :

John 17:4 I have glorified You on the earth. I have finished the work which You have given Me to do.

Jesus said that during his Passover speech and before he went to the garden of Gethsemane to pray. His ministry towards the Jews was finished with his speech and his subsequent prayer in the garden of Gethsemane was a matter of consecrating himself for his arrest, trial, crucifixion and death.

    Here's another one :

John 19:30 So when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, “It is finished!” And bowing His head, He gave up His spirit.

He said that seconds before he died physically. Receiving the sour wine was the last thing he did before he gave up his spirit and died earlier than the crucifixion itself would have made him. He had completed everything he had to do before he could die.

    Here's the next :

John 20:16 Jesus said to her, “Mary!”
She turned and said to Him, “Rabboni!” (which is to say, Teacher).
17 Jesus said to her, “Do not cling to Me, for I have not yet ascended to My Father; but go to My brethren and say to them, ‘I am ascending to My Father and your Father, and to My God and your God.’ ”
18 Mary Magdalene came and told the disciples that she had seen the Lord, and that He had spoken these things to her.

That was at the empty tomb and Jesus revealed himself to Mary Magdalene. Whether he was in a hurry or for some reason he didn't want her to touch him, he told her not to cling to him because he needed to finish his work after his resurrection by ascending to the Father. To present himself there with his blood, to cleanse the things of the heavenly temple (Hebrews 9).

The very next thing that happens is the following :

19 Then, the same day at evening, being the first day of the week, when the doors were shut where the disciples were assembled, for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood in the midst, and said to them, “Peace be with you.”
20 When He had said this, He showed them His hands and His side. Then the disciples were glad when they saw the Lord.
21 So Jesus said to them again, “Peace to you! As the Father has sent Me, I also send you.”
22 And when He had said this, He breathed on them, and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit."

In between verses 18 and 19 he had gone to the Father and now he was in a position to breathe the Holy Spirit on them, meaning that they were born again which is essential for salvation into heaven. Salvation had been completed and was issued.

It started with Jesus finishing his teaching ministry with John 17, it continued with Jesus finishing his physical lifetime in John 19:30, it continued with Jesus finishing his three days in Hades and being resurrected, it continued with his presenting himself before the Father in heaven and only now could he return to the Earth to issue salvation. So it was properly finished in between John 20:18 and 20:19. Before that everything pertaining to the salvation of mankind was incomplete and issuing the new birth was impossible. Everything that happened after this point had to do with empowering the church to become effective, finishing the Word and completing the end time events. Important events but non-essential in terms of making salvation fundamentally available.

There is one final finish you have missed which Jesus accomplishes and is recorded in scripture. The English doesn't use the word finish so people miss it even when using bible programs
Another Greek word is used to describe finish

Its the culimination of the whole story of our salvation and redemption and also includes the fulfilment of the Kingdom.

The word end in Greek is also the root for finish

Jesus whole mission was to bring everything to the Father

1 Cor 15:24 -Then comes the end, when He delivers the kingdom to God the Father, when He puts an end to all rule and all authority and power.

1 Cor 15:24 Then comes the end, when He delivers the kingdom to God the Father, when He puts an end to all rule and all authority and power. 25 For He must reign till He has put all enemies under His feet. 26 The last enemy that will be destroyed is death. 27 For “He has put all things under His feet.” But when He says “all things are put under Him,” it is evident that He who put all things under Him is excepted. 28 Now when all things are made subject to Him, then the Son Himself will also be subject to Him who put all things under Him, that God may be all in all.

And when God is all in all then there is nothing left to be saved from and our salvation has been completed.

What a momentous occasion that will be
To see the glorified and victorious Son of God handing over EVERYTHING to the Father - gives me chills thinking about it
