Royal Wedding Pastor Michael Curry Is Pro-Gay Marriage--Should it Matter?

Christians across the globe were inspired by Bishop Michael Curry's message about love during the royal wedding Saturday, but many of those same Christians then debated whether his views on gay marriage and LGBT issues should matter.

In 2015 he was installed as presiding bishop of the Episcopal Church, becoming the first African-American leader of the predominately white denomination. But before that, as a bishop in North Carolina, he was "one of the first to allow same-sex marriages to be performed in churches there," The Washington Post reported.

When the Anglican Communion penalized the Episcopal Church for its stance on gay marriage, Curry drew parallels between the struggles of African Americans and of those in the LBGT community.

"I stand before you as a descendant of African slaves, stolen from their native land, enslaved in a bitter bondage, and then even after emancipation, segregated and excluded in church and society. And this conjures that up again, and brings pain," he said at the time.

On Twitter over the weekend, Christians and others debated whether Curry's stance on gay marriage should matter.

"Fascinating that so many Christians who are against LGBT people are lauding Michael Curry, a priest who openly marries gay people and welcomes them in. Lack of fact-checking or just choosing not to see?" wrote one person, Siân Duffin (@Siannie81).

‏Robin Self (@triplejaymom), wrote, "For those praising Bishop Michael Curry for bringing the royals 'to church,' as a bishop in the Episcopal church, he is pro abortion, blesses gay marriage, and is highly active in the social justice movement. About as ANTI-Church as you can get."

I discerned by his speech he wasn’t speaking about Agape love.

Curry was speaking about a humanistic kind of love, not agape, which is the God kind of love. The God kind of love will put His will first. The God kind of love says, I don’t care what I feel, or about my own selfish desires, if God says it’s wrong, then I am not going to do it. The God kind of love lays down one’s own life/will, takes up their cross and follows Christ. Not my will, but Your will be done Lord. ✝️

Glad you picked up on that

At first it seemed he was doing well and then I began to feel uncomfortable with his message - something wasn't right

They chose the wrong Bishop...they could have had an anointed Archbishop

As he got into the message, I could see that he was mixing up the different types of love and putting it all in one basket. Clueless. I know AJ had a different opinion of the audience reaction than I did. On the network I was watching, I did indeed see several faces who were just tuned out and reading their programs.

I think the reason the world in lauding the entire "spirit" of the wedding as a coming change is because it was so different from what the royal/ Anglican traditions.

I'm not saying it was a terrible wedding, I thought the wedding was lovely.

I also saw many of them reading their programs while the vows were being said, instead of focusing on watching Harry and Megan actually say them. And I'm not talking random people, I'm talking royal family. I thought it was a British thing, not smiling or engaging in the ceremony. I also thought that they couldn't help but listen to Curry but they just didn't know how to react or receive. I haven't deleted it from my PVR ... I can go watch again.

As for the network any of us watched, from what I understood, there was only one feed from the home British Network that all the networks around the world could use. One set of cameras, one feed.

I didn’t learn until recently that Princess Meghan is a descendant of King Edward III on her father’s side. Who knew? So, from what I gather, she and the Prince are distant cousins.
