Thread: What do you think?

    What do you think?

I have a friend who is neither charismatic nor cessationist. He heads a large ministry and has written several really good books. A few years ago he started having fainting spells. Once he almost died. Once he blacked out on an airplane and was taken directly to the hospital on landing. Then 14 months ago he was on a cruise and had three blackouts in one day. A fellow passenger approached him and said he would like to help my friend. They went to my friend's cabin and the man laid his hands on my friend and did not pray, but spoke directly to the disease. He never once mentioned Jesus, so for all my friend knows, this man may not even have been saved. My friend says he felt nothing as the man spoke to the disease, but ever since that day he has not had even one fainting spell.

Frankly, I would be leery of anyone laying hands on me for any kind of healing if he was not invoking the name of Jesus. My friend seems to have no problem with this. What do you think? Would you accept this kind of "ministry?"

I wouldn't immediately discount it. If the man was a believer, then Jesus certainly honored it. I know of at least one place, Paul on the island of Malta where it doesn't say he used the name of Jesus, just that he laid hands on him and healed him. Doesn't even say Jesus healed him, but Paul healed him.

Now as to your friend, I wouldn't have a problem with it either if I had been healed. And he certainly didn't know how the man was going to minister as far as whether he was going to use the name of Jesus or not. And I think most anyone would accept 'this kind of ministry' if it got them healed, even Christians.

I mean it is a little unusual for him to do it that way if he's a believer, and might cause me some pause. But he's can no problem, so what can you say? I know some will come in here and be dogmatic, but hey, he hasn't had a problem. Now if I'd been told the guy wasn't a Christian beforehand, I wouldn't have let him minister to me. Did he say he was a Christian?

He gave no indication. In fact, according to my friend's FB post about this:

I told him that I appreciated [his offer to help] and was willing but that if his ego needed a win, we shouldn’t do it. I told him I wouldn’t pretend if nothing happened. I told him I don’t like charismatic shows. He said he didn’t either.

In the name of Jesus means to operate under His authority..but it would be odd that one would not at least give Jesus the glory...but as the blind man said, I once was blind but now I see...

What disease did he speak to since there seems to be a lack of knowing what the problem actually was..

I'm OK with it. As fuego mentioned, there is scripture where Paul healed others without invoking the Name of Jesus. There may have been an unspoken understanding.
