I've never liked the taste of any alcoholic beverage, especially beer or stronger drinks. If one has only one or two drinks a year, why not total abstinence? Maybe it's me, I just don't get if it's not something enjoyed, why partake at all? I understand buying a lottery ticket when the jackpot is $300,000,000: But the occasional glass of wine (except for medicinal purposes) or few bottles of beer seems to be stress related.

Wine was used for medicinal purposes in Bible times because, I've heard, of bad water. But we know more now, like the healing properties of natural remedies such as Peppermint and Lavender. But, to each his own, I just don't believe ministers should drink alcohol.

I'm allergic to wine (the mold)
I like a beer now and again (there's an apricot one!)
But, when we join leadership in Bible Study Fellowship they ask us to be circumspect.
And, I too agree that I'd not want to stumble anyone else. I take that seriously.
I know not everyone agrees with that, and that's fine. I have friends who do drink, and friends who do not.

I was a alcoholic when I got saved when I turned 30. Started drinking at 13yrs old. Jesus delivered me from that life style when I went forward to receive Christ at a church revival service.
I knew a few Christians in the past who drank on special occasions. They never had a bad past with alcohol like me. I couldn't and wouldn't ever touch a drop of booze again. As for sin, anything you're held in bondage to and controls you is sin. Could be alcohol or anything else that the devil will use to destroy your life.

Thank you for sharing your testimony Smith. You have potentially a wonderful ministry to help others that struggle with addiction.
Funny, the folks on this Forum who I never thought would drink alcohol do, and those I thought would, don't.

I agree that we should teach them there is nothing wrong with total abstinence...peer pressure is a reason some start...
Now if these young people are taught correct temperate consumption as an adult is a choice they can make and should be made with responsibility...it would IMHO help them grasp that if they saw temperate wise adults drinking in a responsible way..
Sometimes it's better to teach kids responsible behavior rather than trying to force them into it...
But again, as noted, teaching them abstinence is not something to be ashamed of or 'immature'. Underage drinking is both irresponsible and dangerous and they need to know how and why...

I believe they should be taught total abstinence and given the appropriate scriptures to support it. There are no scriptures that support drinking alcohol in "moderation", but several that support complete abstinence.

The Bible warns that drunkards will miss heaven. Yet Paul told Timothy to take a little wine for an ill stomach. And He also mentioned to not get drunk but be filled with the Spirit.
As in my case, my consumption of alcohol over a 17 year period not only destroyed my first marriage, but I also came close to losing my life due to a drunken spree.
I think this article is well balanced on this controversial subject of, "Can a Christian drink alcohol." Of coarse in my case, and walk with Christ, just the thought of taking a drink is greatly disturbing.

I have been a Christian 56 yrs so I never had an opportunity to drink (Thank God) but, I have seen the effects of drinking. Alcohol destroyed my husband's parents marriage and nearly destroyed his Mom's life. But God, had mercy and because of fervent prayer, they are both in Heaven today. My husband grew up with alcohol all around him but he never touched it. The Bible says Wine is a mocker and strong drink is ragging. I personally would never go to a church where they believe it is ok to drink. The Bible says to not let your good be evil spoken of. The sinner world watches us Christians and if they see us going to place that is not where they think Christians should be, we could be a stumbling block to their salvation. Many years ago, I went to a new thrift store in town that had not properly displayed their signs - (small ones), well it used to be a bar and I really didn't think anything about it. A few days later, I mentioned the thrift shop to a friend in church and she very nicely said, yes, I saw you and your Mom coming out of there the other day and I wondered about it. I was glad I had an opportunity to explain my thrift shop visit to her as she was a fairly young Christian. How I thank God for letting me explain myself. By the way, she is still a Christian today. It could have been an opportunity for the devil to ruin my testimony and hurt her.
We have to be a separate people and live a separate life. I am not going to places that I don't feel it is right whether the Christian world calls it legalism or whatever.
