Why I Don't Prophesy to Believers Who Have No Devotional Life

Years ago and early on in my journey being a prophetic minister, I would have been absolutely thrilled and delighted with a believer in Jesus Christ asking me for a "word". I knew exactly what they were doing and was more than happy to assist them in this request. In essence, they were asking me to go before God upon their behalf and get direction and counsel for them and then relay back what I heard. Easy enough right?

    WRONG!!!!

One day as I was in the middle of this process for an individual who had asked me for a "word", the Holy Spirit whispered to me and said, "You have been taught, seen, and have embraced an old covenant mindset and understanding of the prophetic ministry and it's offensive to Jesus Christ."

I said, "Excuse me Holy Spirit?" He said, "It is a violation of the New Covenant to go before the Father on behalf of man and get a word for them. Only Jesus Christ can go before the Father on behalf of man because He is the Word."

I remember so clearly sitting there for more than an hour contemplating what I had just heard. I immediately felt deeply impressed to go back and re-read the book of Hebrews and then it was all over for me!

What was "all over for me" you say?

What was "all over for me" and has been all over for me ever since that day was prophesying to individuals who I consciously know do not have a devotional life with God or maintain a consistent relationship with Him. In fact, I will refuse to prophesy to believers who I discern are looking to put their trust in a word from God and not in God Himself. I firmly believe that releasing prophetic words to believers who we know are not seeking God consistently is to actually deceive them and lead them astray! What they need most is not a prophetic word, but to learn how to abide in Christ! Direction is primarily a byproduct of relationship with Jesus Christ, not some prophetic word we are seeking from a well known prophet in the body of Christ.

Trust me when I say that I have to resist the temptation all the time. I get emails, phone calls, and requests from all over the world and often times from individuals offering me wealth, material possessions, and numerous other offers! "Jeremiah, how about a word from the Lord for me?" they say. I've begun to reply to so many and say, "God says, 'read your bible' or God says, 'I miss you, so come spend time with me and stop wasting your time with a prophet'!"

As New Covenant prophets, we have an incredible responsibility before the Lord Jesus that sadly I was not aware of for many years. The responsibility that I speak of is to tell the people of God the truth! And the truth is this: New Covenant prophets do not play the same role in the lives of believers that they did in the Old Testament. Under the New Covenant, the blood of Jesus has made a way for every believer to stand before the throne of grace with boldness and confidence. They do not need a prophet to go in for them and have sadly turned this ministry into nothing more than psychic reading in a large majority of the body of Christ.

Have I and will I continue to prophesy to thousands of individuals all over the world as the Holy Spirit leads me? ABSOLUTELY.

Will I prophesy to believers whom I discern have no real devotional life with Christ and are simply looking for a "word" as the substance of their walk with Christ? ABSOLUTELY NOT!

To take it a step further and to step on even more toes, I'm not really even comfortable with asking prophets for words from the Lord. There is said and unsaid levels of manipulation and control placed upon prophets in these scenarios and more times than not, the fruit is witchcraft in various forms!

If God Himself prompts a prophet to speak to you and the burden is from the Father, let it be so and receive it, but to approach a prophet and place a demand upon them no matter how innocent the request might be is very dangerous.

I believe God is raising the standard in the prophetic movement. He is transitioning prophets and even the body of Christ out of a Old Covenant mindset of prophecy and into a New Covenant understanding of this ministry.

Prophets are not psychics, magicians, or palm readers. They cannot and should not be asked to take on the role that only Jesus Christ can play in a New Covenant believers life because of His blood that He shed on Calvary.

May God give us grace as prophets to tell the truth and courage as people to receive the truth! The oil of intimacy is non-transferable. It's time to go get your own Beloved!

    The Unknown Dreamer,

    Jeremiah Johnson

I was sitting in a revival service YEARS ago, and the preacher was calling various people up to receive a Word, and I remember praying and asking the Lord if I could go up front. The Lord reminded me that HE can give me a truer Word than anyone else, and that I wasn't to run after preachers, but to seek Him directly.

That being said, there have been times in the more recent past where I have sought counsel from various ministers, but I haven't ever chased after a preacher for an "experience" since that night.

I used to get upset that I was NEVER called out by a prophet to receive a word...until I realized that these "prophets" were calling out their buddies/peers and giving them "words" that the prophets knew they wanted to hear...always about some promotion in ministry and/or reaching the nations, etc. Now I wouldn't even cross my street to hear some of these folk.

This was definitely not the case in the circles I ran in. The C.I. prophets (Jane Hamon, Sharon Stone, Bishop Bill Hamon, etc....) that came to my Church (as well as many others), were from Florida, coming to Virginia. The people they called out were not known to them. And they were always spot-on.
