Thread: What meaneth this?

    What meaneth this?

This passage has been brought to my mind recently by the Holy Spirit, ever so gently and repeatedly over the last couple of weeks.

    Just asking for your input.

I know that the whole context in the chapter is important and here is the passage, specifically the underlined part of verse 11...

    James 4:11-12 KJV
    (11) Speak not evil one of another, brethren. He that speaketh evil of his brother, and judgeth his brother, speaketh evil of the law, and judgeth the law: but if thou judge the law, thou art not a doer of the law, but a judge.

    (12) There is one lawgiver, who is able to save and to destroy: who art thou that judgest another?

Here are a few of the more expanded translations...

    James 4:11-12 AMP.
    (11) [My] brethren, do not speak evil about or accuse one another. He that maligns a brother or judges his brother is maligning and criticizing the Law and judging the Law. But if you judge the Law, you are not a practicer of the Law but a censor and judge [of it].

    (12) One only is the Lawgiver and Judge Who is able to save and to destroy [the One Who has the absolute power of life and death]. [But you] who are you that [you presume to] pass judgment on your neighbor?

    James 4:11-12
    Wuest
    (11) Stop defaming one another, brethren. He who defames his brother or passes a condemnatory judgment upon his brother , defames the law and passes a condemnatory judgment upon the law. Now, if you pass a condemnatory judgment upon the law, you are not a doer of the law but a judge.

    (12) One only is a lawgiver and a judge, He who is able to save and to destroy. But as for you, who are you who passes a condemnatory judgment upon your fellow-man?

    James 4:11-12
    (JMNT)
    (11) Brothers, you must not be continuously speaking (blabbing) down against one another. The one habitually speaking down against a brother, and continuously judging (separating; discriminating; deciding about) his brother, is continuously speaking down against law, and he keeps on judging (deciding about) law. Now if you continue judging law, you are not being a performer (a doer) of law, but rather, a judge.

    (12) There is One Lawgiver and Judge: the One being continuously able (powerful) to deliver (rescue; heal; save) and to destroy (lose). But you, who are you, the one continuously judging the one near you (the neighbor; the associate)?

    Thoughts?
This I say therefore, and testify in the Lord, that ye henceforth walk not as other Gentiles walk, in the vanity (futility) of their mind, having the understanding darkened...
    (Ephesians 4:17-18)

Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly...
    (Psalm 1)

First of all it is a very sobering scripture that we all must be very careful how we communicate.
Every believer has crossed the line in this regard but we are to exercise grace and put into practise speaking good not evil
IMO it is to think the best about a person and not jump to conclusions with rash judgements if we don't understand what they are saying.

Yeah, but how does it relate to 'the law', especially when we aren't under 'the law' any more? Why would he even make reference to the law at all?

Cardinal TT you and I both know that in some circles speaking the truth can be misconsrued for "speaking evil"

    Good point

We can expose sin, rebuke and even warn the church about believers who wont repent of sin and are influencing others so that doesn't mean speaking evil

The law is summed up in the commandment concerning love which he refers to as the perfect law of liberty. The deeper intent of the law lives on even if its letter has been abolished.

Me either. I can understand why that epistle almost didn't make it into the Bible.
