Nephilim and sons of God
*This discussion has been split off from the Preterists thread
Well, here's the thing. As Fuego pointed out, we are called " brothers" by Jesus. However, that doesn't negate at all, what the original Hebrew is saying. As Dr. Michael Heiser has pointed out, the term, "sons of God" was completely understood by pretty much every ancient culture to mean a supernatural class of created beings, who were with God when he created everything (he calls them, "the counsel"). They are created beings. As he also points out, all of us read the bible through a 21st century lense, with little to no understanding at all of the beliefs of ancient cultures.
All mythology concerning giants and such is rooted in Genesis 6....be it Greece, Rome, Pacific Islands, Native Americans, etc.......even if the stories are fantastical and with much embellishment, imo, you will NOT understand history if you do not fully understand Genesis 6. The giants did not only exist in the middle east.

One could argue that the Bible adds the revelation that human beings can be sons of God, not just angelic beings, fallen or otherwise. Sometimes the actual truth is in contrast to what other religions or cultures claim, not to be derived from those sources.
That's my last entry in this particular debate.

If 'sons of God' in the OT is actually referring to angels, the term obviously means something entirely different when referring to them and the redeemed in the NT who are called sons of God.

The word "if" says that you aren't convinced that Genesis 6, and the book of Job aren't referring to angels when it says "sons of God"?

Nope, since I don't believe angelic beings and humans can procreate. I think it would be 'physically' impossible since angels are spirits, regardless if they have the ability to manifest themselves in the natural.

That's a BIG part of it ...
Also considering that the Flood would've only taken care of the offspring that were running around then ... What about all the ones since? What if the guy sitting next to you is actually a nephilim and can't be saved, can't be trusted, is irredeemable, and out to get you? (That teaching is rampant in the church by the way ... Not from most pulpits, but in the pews).

Seriously? I've heard people discussing it (usually in quiet, pastor-shouldn't-hear-because-he-won't-receive-it- tones with one person as the instigator and several hangers-on listening to it) in just about every church I've ever been in ... It's always made me throw up all over the place.

Nephilim are all gone. Died out centuries ago. I would have to hear more of this to understand what is being said.
