    Just curious...
Years ago I had a lady who continually caused problems in the church (I won't get into the dirty details but she was very controlling and had what some might call a "Jezebel" spirit). I talked to her about it many times alone and later with the leadership. She never stopped. Finally I wrote a letter of discipline (citing all Bible passages that pertained to discipline). We had our regular service and after the service I asked all members to stay. I read the letter in front of the congregation and informed everyone that she was on discipline and laid out the reasons why. She was to have no active participation in the church though she was welcomed to continue attending church services.

Not too long after that she began demanding every week why her tithe check was not cashed and making other demands on us about her tithese. I finally gave her all the checks we did not cash back to her and told her that she will not be controlling this church by her money. When she recognizes that she is giving this to the Lord and not to men then she can give them back. That was the clincher for her. She left the church.

Had another young lady who I found out was sleeping with another guy who was coming to the church. When I confronted them I was told that just because I am her pastor does not mean that it is my business what she does. That set me off so that Sunday I preached a message using Scriptures about Achan causing the whole Israelite camp to be defeated and also pointed to where 1 Cor. 5 where Paul reminded the people that a little leaven leavens the whole lump. After the service my leadership had a meeting with me because they knew who I was addressing and told me that I was being too harsh. I laughed. It let me now that I needed to schedule some leadership training

She later repented so that was one of the very rare good outcomes.

Others have simply left the church when I have (to their shock) gotten right in their face and told them that I was not tolerating their actions. I have told them that if they want to sin then there are numerous churches in the city that will accept them and their sin (like some who wanted to shack up). I told them that it is not happening here. I have been called "legalistic," "harsh" and other not-so-nice things. Doesn't bother me as long as I know that God is pleased with me.

Believe it or not, I recently found out we had a man in our congregation about 6 years ago who attempted to rape a couple of women and actually raped one... and the man was not asked to leave AND the pastor at the time didn't encourage the woman to press charges. He was still allowed to come to services, fellowship and help in various ministries.

I found out because the woman came to me for ministry.

I can't even comprehend a pastor acting like that. What is this, the Twilight Zone?

Yeah. No kidding. People who were living together were allowed to help in ministries. He dedicated their babies...

He always listened to the ones who were "uncomfortable" with things like dancing and flags... anything that people found "distracting."

From the outside, we looked like a thriving, growing church. In reality, we were the church in Sardis.

    Just like Jesus

LOL, just think of how Jesus went out of His way to help people but at the same time came down hard on the Jewish religious leaders and the money changers. I still have a loooooooong ways to go in catching up to Jesus but I am modeling myself after Him.

It would have taken all the restraint I could muster not to do handle this one in a PHYSICAL way.

In churches where this kind of open sinning is occurring among the congregation, it is a sign of a pastor not taking due diligence with the care of the flock he has been given charge over by God. He is responsible for the spiritual health of the entire body. So, if there is sin allowed to remain unchecked, then eventually it will permeate the flock, polluting and diluting it from the truth.

Of course people who are unsaved or are hypocrites will come, and they are welcome to come and find Jesus! But if there is no repentance over time, then the watchmen (you and me) of the flock need to speak up and inform leadership if leadership is missing it. We are all responsible. I have the utmost respect for pastors and leaders in the churches who keep a particular eye out for people who come in and reveal an agenda---to find a wife or to find a husband...or simply a date! Such types are quickly dealt with, and even sent out, for the welfare and protection of our single men and women (even mature singles) is of utmost importance.
