    Curious arts (Acts 19:19)

magical arts; jugglery practiced by the Ephesian conjurers

Ephesus was noted for its wizard and the “Ephesian spells;” i.e., charms or scraps of parchment written over with certain formula, which were worn as a safeguard against all manner of evils. The more important and powerful of these charms were written out in books which circulated among the exorcists, and were sold at a great price.

I'm amazed that a lot of modern day Christians read horoscopes, read fortune cookies, play witchcraft based video games, etc, etc,

And they can't figure out why God seems so distant to them...

I guess the Baptist are ok with it. I remember in my Pentecostal upbringing, they were very opposed to it. I never quite knew why because I was never interested in it. I just remember them preaching against secret societies. So they really worship Satan?

I think the whole thing is very layered so that the lower levels aren't that involved. At the top levels, who knows. The air may have gone out of their balloon compared to what things were like for instance a century ago, too. But why any Christian would want to engage in any of that regardless, I have no idea. Did she give you any reasons for why you should bother to join her ?

Depends on the Baptist Church. I was taught, both in a Baptist college and in Baptist churches that freemasonry was evil and that Christians should stay out of it. Also, I spent 6 weeks one summer working in Utah under the auspices of an independent Baptist missions organization and became aware of the connection between freemasonry and mormonism.

Wow, I'll bet that was a trip... hangin out in Utah witnessing to mormons.

So, how did that go anyway?

Seems like the mormons would not have taken too kindly to people telling them they needed to be saved.

Kinda like witnessing to catholics when they think you are the one on the way to hell.

There's a lot of scary rituals involved. What I'm questioning is to which degree there is anything spiritual going on beyond make believe, especially with the lower levels (the common man, so to speak). I'm thinking that the free masons may have become largely secularized just like many church people have become, since centuries ago. Is there something spiritual going on when many church goers take communion, attend child baptism, weddings etc ? In many cases they just perform the rituals, vow to be godfather for the child or whatever and there is nothing else going on than that.
