The Church Has Fallen Into the Deadly Trap of People Worship

The Church Has Fallen Into the Deadly Trap of People Worship
    John Burton

Idolizing people has forever been the norm in the world. Sadly, the church is catching up, and fast.

"The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately sick; who can understand it?" (Jer. 17:9, ESV)

For as long as any of us can remember, adoration of celebrities, athletes and others in the public eye has been rampant in our society. Kids and adults alike are endeavoring to become Instagram- and YouTube-famous. The red carpet, paparazzi life is the dream for many. Others are satisfied being awestruck and starstruck.

Yes, this article is about people worship, but it's not really about the run-of-the-mill movie star fantasy. I'm going to take it a level deeper.

Both the World and the Church are Guilty

The hearts of the children of man are full of evil, and madness is in their hearts while they live, and after that they go to the dead (Ecc. 9:3).

Looking beyond the glitz and glamour we will discover a wicked and brilliant strategy of the enemy to exalt mankind and...

    Charisma Magazine?

I did click through to see that there was actual article there but won't read it, the irony of Charisma Magazine calling out "people worship" is just a bit too much.

As long as charismatic eloquent speaking pastors and TV preachers are put up front on the pedestal, they will always be admired and idolized by those who flock before them.
Celebrity preachers are a dime a dozen, and a new breed of these type of "ministers" are on the rise.
Not for the sake of serving those they minister too, but for the celebrity status of the type of "Hollywood" recognition they seek to inflate their ego.
Not to mention the temporary worldly riches and fleshly fame that the celebrity preachers crave and expect their followers to lavish upon them.

Some of these so called "American" preachers should visit a underground church in a country where the gospel is outlawed, and the saints and pastor are persecuted for being Christians. They might actually learn a lesson or two on serving the flock of God and the personal sacrifice it costs to be a loyal and dedicated follower of the Lord Jesus Christ.
If you put God First, you have Him at Last.

It's a real article by John Burton. I follow John on FB and he draws a firm line in what he sees in the church today and what he believes scripture actually says. It's a very firm line. On holiness, sin, losing your salvation. And then this article on worship.

The western church certainly does this and can exalt leaders beyond what is scriptural - giving respect and honour is Biblical but adoration/idolisation is not

Believers will agree we should respect ministers but not swallow everything blindly - in reality what they are saying only applies to 'other' leaders not their personal favourites. Watch them get angry, offended and defensive when their favorite minister is mentioned in the same conversation

    It's quite comical to watch

(I am not referring to abuse, slander or nasty attitudes towards leaders as that should never be tolerated but general discussion about teachings or issues that have become public)

I chuckle when christians put up quotes/memes from their favorite preacher and they are corny/cringeworthy.
The minister is trying too hard to be witty, relevant and edgy but falls flat yet the adoring sheep think it came from the throne room
