Including World War I which was seen as a sure sign of the imminent return of Christ. Same thing with the cold war, Kathryn Kuhlman spent a whole meeting in 1975 talking about how recent events involving the Soviet Union should be interpreted in terms of the end times. And it was all bogus.
Regarding the state of the American church which may be very different to the state of the church in many other parts of the world. Let's say that two hundred million people in the US have been in the habit of going to church several times a month during the last 50 years and that half of those have left or are leaving. Or have come out of the closet as total hypocrites. God doesn't care much about appearances so to him this may not matter that much when he assesses the state of the American church. A "great falling away" may have taken place a long time ago in the hearts and minds and secret lives of many of these church goers and that is the timing that God, who knows all things, sees.
The anti-Christ emerged the day islam was born. The spirit of the anti-Christ says "God has no Son".

Or that human beings cannot be born again. The Eastern religions do at least work with that concept, Islam does not.
