Australian Hillsong pastor under police investigation
Has anyone been following the Brian Houston/Hillsong case out of Sydney Australia? Am I reading this correctly that he may be tried for the sins of his father? The founder of the Hillsong Church is being investigated for allegedly not informing the authorities about sex crimes committed by his father. The case has been reopened against Brian Houston, Hillsong Australia’s founder for hiding his father’s, a known child molester, "pedophilia crimes."

Wow.
Did we have another thread about this because I want to say I didn't know about it and yet it sounds familiar...
So not sure if I did or didn't know.
But either way, just WOW.

I don’t know the laws in Australia but they sound similar to ours. No matter what, pastors have to report molestation or face jail time themselves. I know of a pastor who had to turn his assistant pastor’s son in. The son was 19 and molested a 13yr old. The son went to prison for 15mo. but he could have gotten 10yrs. The pastor turned him but fought to get his sentences reduced. However , the asst pastor was still bitter and caused a church split.

Its a bit more complicated due to the fact that the victim didn't want to go to the authorities initially and was also an adult. What he wanted was for Frank Houston to be exposed for molesting him. Frank was stood down by his Son Brian who was President of AOG Australia at the time.
It got messy because Brian and the Executive council didn't show concern for the victim and the way they dealt with it was far from christian.
I'm not sure of the legalities of a adult not wanting to go to the police and that is what they are currently looking into.
We had a major Royal Commission into sex abuse of children in the church primarily the Catholic Church but Brian and some of the Executive AOG Council were also called in to testify regarding his Father's sexual abuse.
The sad part was that Brain and the AOG leaders testifying failed miserably in reaching out to the victim and they seemed more intent in protecting themselves and the AOG.

Why does that always seem to be the case any time something like this happens, secular or sacred.

I agree Fuego....this is what has pained me and my wife when we watched the story and found out the details.
If they took the difficult but godly route 19 years ago and really showed compassion to the victim and didn't try to protect themselves then today we would be applauding them for their mercy, courage and true christian witness. Sadly it has given people another excuse to hate on the church.
I know it would have been extremely painful for Brain to deal with this but he has stood before multiple thousands and proclaimed what it means to be a leader in the church and has reaped many rewards yet this revealed deep down he was not the godly leader that was expected of him

I read Brian Houston's book where he talks about that whole ordeal. Maybe it revealed something about AOG leadership mentality too ? Attitudes inherited from yesteryear - maybe even from the beginning of its formation about 100 years ago - may have something to do with it. I'm sure they related to adultery in a sensible way back then but maybe not that well to sexual abuse, homosexuality and pedophilia.
