Showdown looms over SBC and Calvinism

A longtime Southern Baptist leader warns there is a theological civil war brewing over the influence of Calvinist leaders within the denomination.

Richard Land, the former head of the Southern Baptist Convention's Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission, says he supports Ken Hemphill to lead the SBC as president in order to preserve the gospel message and to defend the role of evangelism.....

.....There have always been Calvinists within the Southern Baptist Convention, observes Land, who likens their influence to the "harmony and never the melody" of the 15-million member denomination.

He describes the current struggle over the next leader as a battle between the "Billy Graham wing" of the SBC versus the "John Calvin wing."

"This is about the gospel and whether or not the gospel is for everyone, not just the elect," Land tells OneNewsNow.....

...McFarland says the denomination has seen an increase in young leaders who espouse "New Calvanism," an idea that he rejects. The denomination must adhere to its traditional understanding of salvation.

"We're not commissioned to talk theology over lattes," he says. "We're commissioned to go and preach the gospel to every creature – win the world for Christ – and we need a president that will inspire us."...

....The issue of Calvinism's influence is the biggest issue facing the Southern Baptist Convention at the moment, Land adds.

This I say therefore, and testify in the Lord, that ye henceforth walk not as other Gentiles walk, in the vanity (futility) of their mind, having the understanding darkened...
    (Ephesians 4:17-18)

Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly...
    (Psalm 1)

So if the Calvin "wing" gets the power, what practical effect will be the result?

I suspect there is grave concern for the future enthusiasm of evangelism...the hallmark of Southern Baptist..

I find that interesting since Calvinists/Reformed are about evangelism a lot.

I wish more people could grasp the fact that the Bible gives us both predestination and free will.

or, maybe the fringe factor (from both perspectives) are getting in the way.

What's so funny about it to me is even the 'free will' Baptists believe in OSAS, and OSAS comes from Calvinism. To believe that one has 'free will' but can never lose their salvation is contradictory.

Some of the greatest evangelists have been Calvinists, notably George Whitefield. Others as well. That said, I hope the Billy Graham wing maintains influence in the SBC.

God predestined this to happen and for free will to be the majority in the SBC

But that's what I am trying to get at. Everybody has their notion of what happens "under the hood", spiritually, but it doesn't have to affect ministry outreach, etc.

That's why I am curious what would change practically. What is particular about the neo-Calvinist that would change outreach or other Christian activities?

They would all join a secret society of Ninjas and take over the internet

I would note that there has been increasing openness by the SBC to speaking in tongues.
