I think some of it has to do with people who have deep-rooted feelings of insecurity or low self-esteem, who also feel disenfranchised and disrespected - They want to prove to the world that "they have arrived and they are somebody" - If that makes sense?
It's as if they are making a statement that says: "While my ancestors may have been slaves, look at me now!"

What hubris! What hauteur! What blatant pomposity! God considers it dung. $300 for a plate full of snobbery and pompousness. I better quite here before I speak my mind on this matter.
