as someone who's in neither group, I found this a very interesting read.
Nikos, it's very unfortunate that as the discussion went there was not taking shots until you joined it. That makes me sad because I like you a lot and it's unnecessary for you to do that sort of thing.
Thanks, guys..
the only thing I'd hope you might realize is that you all don't have a corner on the Holy Spirit. He's moving in main stream churches too. Just not the way you might expect, or even like.

I didn't get that out of the conversation at all, Femme. The OP was just a question I had so I could sort things out in my own mind about the differences between Charismatics and Pentecostals, not between those two and main line denoms... I didn't get that anyone (except Nikos) thought that anyone has a corner on the presence of Holy Spirit. So I'm not sure why you're hearing that anyone is implying that charismatics and pentecostals think they do.

sorry, I wasn't clear..
I've heard, over and over and over ad nauseum how only if you've had a separate experience, demonstrated by speaking in tongues, have you been "baptized by the Holy Spirit"..
Not specifically stated in the thread, but it's implied.
The rest of us think that baptism comes with the born again experience.
that's what I meant.
BUT, I DO NOT want to derail this thread.. so those who will be ready to point out to me all the ways I'm wrong, save it for another time in another thread.
I'm learing about differences that I didn't know. I always thought the charismatic/pentecostal were pretty much synonymous.
(same that I'm learning Calvinism and Reformed aren't exactly the same thing too!!)

The Holy Spirit is present in a person's heart before they are baptized in the Spirit and he operates in a limited way. The baptism in the Holy Spirit is for being clothed with power, not for receiving the Spirit at all.
Luke 24:49 I am going to send you what my Father has promised; but stay in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high.
Per John 20:22, the disciples received the Spirit already on the day of the resurrection so that is not what he is talking about.

For you to be allowed to conclude on the matter ? It isn't really off topic. The Holy Spirit is doing a lot in mainstream denominations as you say, some of it is because the Charismatic revival has reached those, some of it is because the Holy Spirit does work also where people aren't baptized in the Spirit. And some Charismatics don't really teach the baptism in the Spirit as a very concrete event where one receives it and then it manifests by way of the person speaking in tongues, some are really fuzzy about how the Spirit came to manifest through them in terms of the nine gifts. As if he just came upon them while they were participating in worship in some service and then later they speak in tongues, prophecy etc.
