The Rev. Jamal H. Bryant, senior pastor of New Birth Missionary Baptist Church in Stonecrest, has joined more than two dozen other pastors nationwide on a hunger strike for greater voting protections.

The protest kicked off on the first anniversary of the Jan. 6 insurrection in which pro-Donald Trump supporters stormed the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C. in an attempt to prevent the certification of Democrat Joe Biden as president.

The goal of the strike is to press Congress to pass voting rights legislation by Jan. 17, which is observed as Martin L. King Jr. Day.

"As faith leaders, we are called to speak truth to power and to raise the conscience of this nation through moral resistance," Bryant said in a press release about the strike.

"This moment requires sacrifice and a deep commitment to radical love in action in order to redeem the soul of this nation and protect our democracy. I call on faith leaders to join me in this hunger strike continuing the tradition of Rev. Dr. Martin L. King, Jr. and Congressman John Lewis." So far, Bryant is the only pastor participating in Georgia.

Last year, Bryant was one of several Georgia religious leaders who called for a boycott of companies who did not speak out against efforts in the state legislature to limit voting access. The state went blue in support of Biden in the last presidential election.

Georgia passed a strict overhaul of elections that would, in part, require additional identification for absentee voting, limit absentee voting drop boxes to early voting sites and allow the state to takeover county elections. Other states have enacted similar legislation.

Popular radio commentator Joe Madison is on the 60th day of his hunger strike for voting rights. He posted on Twitter that he has not eaten solid food since Nov. 8. "I will not until the president signs either the Freedom to Vote Act of the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act."

Sorry but I have no understanding of this issue. Is what they're doing a good thing or a bad thing.

Also, don't pastors usually fast and pray? ... and not go on a "hunger strike?"

    I find this confusing...

Just a brief reading of the summary of the act - boy, this act is not good. If what I read is in the deeper pages of the act, tt paves the way for federal intervention in States' election processes. This is really against the foundation of the constitution and the rights of each individual to oversee its own election processes.

I agree with you - the secret place is where God moves to change things. The Biblical examples are there for us to follow. The article also states that one person has not eaten for 60 days - but has taken no "solid food." I'll just leave that right there.

Wonder how long this will last. If you aren't used to fasting you aren't going to make it long on a hunger strike. Just grandstanding. lol.

This is their goal. Believe me, they pay illegals in California to vote. It's one of their biggest voting blocks. Spanish TV is paid to tell Spanish speaking people that the other side are racist and hate them.

If you have to show identification, it foils the plan

... and not sure what kind of 60 day hunger strike this Joe Madison is on, according to this he's just not eating solid foods.

I always wondered what happened to those 40 guys that bound themselves with an oath not to eat or drink until they killed Paul.

I don't understand the point of hunger strikes. I don't care if a person doesn't eat, it seems the adult version of a toddler holding his breath. I do find the idea of Pastors "hunger striking" rather than "fasting and praying" particularly gross, but I hardly consider that grifter, Jamal Bryant, a Pastor. I don't know who the entire group is, but I assume some of them could probably use a good fast!

Per their Hunger Strike I see it as little more than a Satanic Fast
