Thread: Yard Waste

    Yard Waste

I have a large yard and usually in the spring and the fall I will get a good amount of yard waste accumulated. My city just started picking up yard waste for the new year this week and thanks to some nice warm days I was able to get 5 garbage cans full of leaves and garden debris out to the curb for pick up.

But apparently that is going to be our one and only pick up for a while as this notice just came...

Unfortunately a lot of people did not realize that yard waste season started this week so now they're just going to have to wait until further notice to get rid of theirs.

We don't have any waste pickup scheduled. But, I'm thankful, so grateful, that they are still picking up regular garbage.

Me too. But now there's talk of stopping bulk pick up also, so only whatever fits in your garbage can might be it for the week.

We haul our own garbage to the disposal site and have never raked leaves in our yard, ever. In summer, Rog will use the bag on the push lawn mower for the front yard and dump the clippings in the bush and the rest is done on the riding mower.

Raking leaves sounds like a painful ordeal.

AJ, I know you have a lot of property but is any of it fenced in, like around the house maybe? In the springtime the fence area is usually the culprit where a lot of the leaves pile up from all the winter winds.

Nope. Not in the yard. We have barbed wire fence around the perimeter of the 15 acres and on each side of the driveway... 99% wild treas. mostly poplar, lots of saskatoon and some chokecherry, willows.... then there's maples and caraganna that have planted themselves over the years but they're just part of the bush.... a row of spruce along one fence line we planted , one apple tree..... most of our grass that we cut in our yard is quackgrass... it's a pain in the garden because of the root system, but is controllable... To us it looks like any other grass when you keep it cut. We planted tame grass in the front yard, but its a pretty small area compared to the rest of the yard. Very low maintenance except for the 2-3 hours a week it takes to cut the grass in the summer.

We have to call the county and they have to come look at the 'pile' and they charge according to how much and come out a few days later and pick it up. The least they charge is $20.

I've never heard of that before. What do people normally do with their yard waste, just let it accumulate till you have a big pile?
