Although cougar attacks on people are still (thankfully) pretty rare, there’s a place in the world where big cats kill and eat people pretty much every other week. In the Sundarban Islands in India, about two dozen people get killed and eaten by tigers every year. Over the past few decades the local villagers have tried lots of tricks to dissuade tigers from attacking them, but probably the most effective has been this: they wear masks on the backs of their heads. Tigers, like most cats, always prefer to attack their prey from behind. Villagers who wear the masks when out and about in the jungle get attacked way less often than those who don’t.

The backwards mask idea is what my buddy and I joke about when we go in. We chuckle for a moment and turn for a look behind us.

Fall of 2013 I heard primal screams some 400yds away back in the woods. Heard that on consecutive nights. Same week, different consecutive nights I sat in my pine tree on the edge of the thick grove watching a food plot when I heard a loud, prolonged hiss about 60ft back in the pines to my 6. After two nights of that and the two nights of screams...I am sitting in it’s kill box hunting the cat’s dinner. I walked the 300yds home and asked my wife if I texted her for the jeep if she knew where my treestand is. Also asked her if she knew which rifle was my lever action. From then on I always left a little daylight when leaving the stand. The cougar had been seen by several witnesses that were also hunters. Never did have another casual walk back there after that week.

In this area where we now live, people in the community speak of numerous sightings.

Wow. That cat will follow you home if you mess with its meal. They don't like that.

Yeah, just cant go diddy-boppin thru like a tourist. Then, in this new area where it is very secluded I get a weirded out feeling when I’m cycling the local roads and mountain bike trails.

Had the grands for the weekend and of course that means some gun safety instruction and good trigger time. The weapon was the .177 airgun (pellets), the distance to target 60ft. The rifle is too big for his small 10yr old frame so was tough to focus and shoot. So I thought. His first shot?? Here is the pic

So at 4am I am faintly hearing something outside. My hearing isnt what it used to be so I get up and crank open a window to hear the cacophony of a group of Great Horned Owls. They probably were having a feeding moment and we are probably missing a yard rabbit.
