    Handloading/Shooting

Today a rifle came back to me, one I'd sold and tried to not regret it. My friend said he wanted to get it back to me. This rifle caused me more frustration while trying to accurize it, almost shoved it into the ground as a tomato stake. Anyways, floated barrel, bedded the action, hand-lapped the bore, epoxied the scope mounts and finally got a homerun tip from a marine sniper coaching me over the phone. Tomorrow I will check accuracy to see how it shoots. It has shot sub 1/2" groups and helped me take an 8pt at 405yds. I couldn't help but to stare at it on my lap today, thank you Jesus!

Here is the Weatherby Vanguard Sporter .257mag with Mueller 8.5-26 power scope.

Curious here, what was the tip?

Overall cartridge length as it related to bullet seating depth. At that time I was following an oldschool rule to not seat a bullet less than the bullet diameter (to prevent wobble). The suggestion was basically the only guess left, seat the bullet way less than I would otherwise do. He chuckled when I said "what about that old rule?", he said just try it without changing anything else. Weatherby chambers have tremendous freebore and it was hurting accuracy on this rifle. I found the sweet spot and with 100gr Sierra Gamekings it will shoot 3/4 minute all day, even better with ballistic tips and other longer bullets.
