Thread: Ammo Shortage

    Ammo Shortage

There is nothing more perplexing in the world of shooting than the present day ammo shortage. Almost 10yrs ago we saw the .22LR ammo dry up thanx to our own kind snapping it up by the truckload. Eventually that shortage came to an end after a 5 year wait. Walking into your favorite outdoors place and seeing bare shelves is rather post-apocalyptic. There are theories of gov't buyups to keep us short but if true, then the govt would also have to regulate ammo output which major manufacturers say is not happening.

I'm not a bunker type by any means but am glad to always have extra on hand.

Us too! We have extra on hand, too. We saw this in the Obama days, and have kept inventory up since.

Not that I'm trying to shoot down your story but I had a few rounds stored somewhere until the boating accident. I hope I can afford to replace the lost round so I can do some target practice and hunt again. Oh wait, I still have 50 9mm rounds here with me in Israel. Wonder how much it will cost to shoot a few rounds at the local range in Talpiot, three blocks from our offices.

If you find a supplier there will be a 1 box limit and most likely at least double the price from what it was last summer.

True, there is always a one box limit. The question is how often I can buy the limit and do I have to prove I only own one box at a time? We are required to re-qualify every year by shooting one box of 50 rounds and hitting the target more than 30 times. I seriously can't believe the qualification is that easy. But getting the license is nearly impossible. Once the police figured out that I actually can hit the center of the target 50 times out of 50 they asked me to carry every day. And they also asked me to carry a little hat that says I am security. It is folded up in my back pocket right now.

The standards are terribly low. In CPL training and qualifying there was among our 6 those that sprayed their 40 "training" rounds over the entire target. I felt bad for them. I put all 40 and the 10 qualifying shots in one ragged hole covering the bullseye. For the others it was the toughest and most tense of the classwork. For me, it was the most fun. Some of them never really had any training with their weapon.

Our gun club had 9 mm ammo for $32.99/box... no limit. I didn't get a closer look at it, so I didn't catch the manufacturer. And I'm not the household ammo buyer so I don't know if that was a good buy or not. Now, talk to me about the price of eggs, and I can tell you $0.88/doz at my local Aldi's is a fantastic buy!

I don't use 9mm but can compare the price line with .45auto I use. Before this last wave of shortages hit I would buy good, American made ammo for 15-17.00 for a box of 50. This next week I will try my 2 favorite shops to check status.

The one "outlier" in ammo supplies? Militia training. Let that sink in

I know this is an ammo thread, but we went from $0.88/doz to $2.40+ in a year.
