    A 'tribute' to Jesse White

Well it's not really a tribute per se, but just wondering how many remember this old-timer? And how many of you knew who I was talking about just from his name in the title? I couldn't have told you his name.

I was watching an episode from the first season of Andy Griffith ("Andy the Marriage Counselor") and he was in it. Many here will remember him as a staple of guest shots on tv shows and from movies for many many years. And probably most well known as the "Maytag Repairman' who never had work because Maytags were supposedly so reliable.

Looking at his IMDB page, his first appearance which was uncredited was in "Stage Door Canteen" in 1943. He was in all the old classics like Gunsmoke, The Lone Ranger, Ozzie and Harriet, Make Room for Daddy (a regular), The Bob Cummings Show, The Frank Sinatra Show (a regular), The Real McCoys, Donna Reed, Dick Van Dyke, etc, etc, etc, etc, etc. And many movies. His very last appearance was in Seinfeld in '96. He died in 1997.

This was his first commercial for Maytag:

I knew immediately who you were talking about. I just saw him a couple of times in a few old TV shows that I watch occasionally; Mannix, Hart to Hart, and Perry Mason.

Love this man. Every character he’s portrayed fits him to a T! One of my favorites is his role in “The Bad Seed” with Patty McCormack and William (Paul Drake on Perry Mason) Hopper, son of Hedda Hopper.

He played Cagey Calhoun on Ann Sothern's sitcom "Private Secretary." That was in the 1950s

I should’ve said, he was the first person I thought of when I saw the name. But I wasn’t sure you were talking about him.

I knew who he was too, just by his name. I love those old character actors.

So do I. I caught an old Johnny Carson program on TV last night and one of the guest was Rodney Dangerfield. That man was a riot!

Several years ago, I read a little of his life story (don’t recall where), but his childhood was so tragic (sexual abuse) to say the least.

It made me cry and every time I’ve seen him since learning about it, I notice there is a quiet sadness in his eyes. They say most of the great comedians suffered tragedy in their lives...I’m inclined to believe it.

The name did ring a bell but when I first saw the title I did wonder if it was about some old time evangelist you ran across some info on.

...and yeah, now that I see his pic I remember him well.
