Thread: Does 'Believe the Prophets' Apply to Us Today? Michael Brown

  1. #21
Despite what anyone else says (and the extreme dispensational hermeneutic often used to justify it), I believe that 2 Chronicles 20:20, as well as all of the Old Testament promises are for the people of God today:

All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:*(2 Timothy 3:16)

For all the promises of God in him are yea, and in him Amen, unto the glory of God by us.*(2 Corinthians 1:20)

Besides that, the New Testament itself gives clear instructions on what our attitude is to be concerning prophecy: "Despise not prophesyings.*Prove all things; hold fast that which is good" (1 Thessalonians 5:20, 21).

Healing and prosperity were part of the OT covenant and we have a better covenant based on better promises. (Heb. 8:6) There's nothing unscriptural about believing that God wants us to be healthy and prosperous, and I don't know where you get the idea that you have to choose between health & wealth and holiness. And what does that have to do with prophecy? That's just plain ol' exposition.

Except that there are millions of devout, holy, Godly believers who are stricken with cancer, or some illness or disability, or are impoverished.

The implication being that they're that way by God's decree?

What's that have to do with God's will? It's his will that all be saved and come to a knowledge of the truth also, but they aren't all saved. So you're seeming argument has no merit.

My point is, following God by no means means that we'll all end up healthy and wealthy, as some prosperity-Gospel preachers would have us believe. Plenty of believers in North Korea, Saudi Arabia, etc. follow God devoutly and end up with the exact opposite of "health and wealth."

Nobody said we are to end up all millionaires. But we are to believe that God will perform His Word for anyone/anywhere who believes it ! Luke 6:38
    New Living Translation
38 Give, and you will receive. Your gift will return to you in full—pressed down, shaken together to make room for more, running over, and poured into your lap. The amount you give will determine the amount you get back.

'Devout' is not how we receive from God. Romans 5 doesn't say "we have access into this grace through 'being devout.'" But the Word of God certainly makes health and 'abundant supply' available to all Christians.

    2 Corinthians 9
8 And God is able to make all grace (every favor and earthly blessing) come to you in abundance, so that you may always and under all circumstances and whatever the need be self-sufficient [possessing enough to require no aid or support and furnished in abundance for every good work and charitable donation].

By the way, that's a scripture. Not something I made up.

Thanks for this word picture. It made it very clear for me.
