    Hot, cold or lukewarm ?

Here's a good page on that scripture from Rev 3:14-16

    Laodicea Aqueduct

Many people make the mistake of interpreting warm as good, cold as bad and lukewarm as even worse but the context is very local in nature, where warm water was useful for bathing, cold water for drinking and lukewarm water from the local aqueduct for neither. So they were lukewarm as in like the rest of the world and therefore good for nothing.

When you do tours of Turkey the christian guides explain all the above. It is fascinating to see the practical explanation that Jesus used to analyze all 7 churches.

The apostle John would of been clearly aware of what Jesus was saying from the practical as well as spiritual point of view.

But we aren't necessarily which means that our interpretations of various passages may be off because of that. Paul's letters to the Corinthians seem to be full of references to local things and I'm not sure if they can all be understood based on recorded history, Roman or local.

Interpretation can be off for many reasons. Who has the final say?

The Holy Spirit, then ten different interpretations are attributed to him. 1 Cor 11 seems to involve arguing about a local belief but who knows what that local belief actually amounted to. Which makes things very difficult.

The one thing that is not "off" is what God thought of Laodicea. A church of failed expectations and squandered potential to reach the lost in their area. It's like going to a shower and reaching for both hot and cold faucets and neither produces what it should.

One translation I cannot seem to find that I read many years ago supports your last paragraph. Something like, "I wish you were either hot and stimulating or cold and refreshing..." meaning both of those are good things.
