Thread: Did Jesus Know?

    Did Jesus Know?

Ok, so Easter has passed, and a we (my family and I) had a discussion.

We were discussing the History Channel's and the Life of Jesus. And when Jesus was baptized by John, and God says, "this is My Son..." it is suggested that at that moment, was when Jesus received His ministry, and knew what was going to happen to Him, and what He needed to do.

I have always had the belief that Jesus, being, well Jesus, had always known. From the moment He had awareness as a "human" could be aware from infancy. He is God, above any other, why wouldn't He know?

So, could some one help me a bit and maybe clarify this for me. I think I need to buy those theological books or something.

Jesus became a man with all the limitations of a man. He wasn't omniscient when walking the earth. He only knew what the Father told Him by the Spirit. I like what I heard Bill Johnson say one time, "Jesus was the prototype of the NT Christian."

When did He know the plan fully? No way to know. But, he did know something already at 12 years old when He was in the temple and said, "I must be about My Father's business" or "be in My Father's House" depending on the translation. So at 12 He did have at least some information as to who He was.

I believe his understanding grew over time of who he was and his mission. Obviously he had greater awareness at a younger age than the average person.

Like Fuego said he was human and was limited in his knowledge as the Holy Spirit revealed what he needed to know at the right time.

His understanding may have grown as he heard the Old Testament being read in the synagogue, eventually hearing all of it.

Jesus, being the second person of the Godhead (trinity) shared in the love and glory of the Father before the foundation of the world (Jn 17:24).
God knew who would be saved before the foundation of the world (Eph 1:4-5).
God knew whose names would not be written in the book of life, before the foundation of the world (Rev 13:8).
The point is, God is omniscient. He knows everything from beginning to end.
In eternity past, before the foundation of the world, God the Son was with the Father.
I believe Jesus had the same foreknowledge (omniscient) that the Father had. Even to the point, that in their predetermined foreknowledge, Jesus knew He would have to pay the penalty for the eventual fall of the human race before God created Adam.
Proof that Jesus knew His assignment is found in Mark 8:31.
And He began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders and the chief priests
and the scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise again.
If you put God First, you have Him at Last.

Not while walking the earth He didn't. He operated under the limitations of a man. Jesus was not omniscient, omnipotent, or any other omni while walking the earth. He did everything as a man anointed by the Holy Spirit. If He did it any other way, then He wasn't an example for us and sons of God, and the example of something we could follow. When He came though that womb it He was divested of all means of ability that came as Almighty God. This is what it means when the Bible says He 'emptied' Himself.

Jesus didn't know who touched him proving he wasn't omniscient

Luke 8:43 Now a woman, having a flow of blood for twelve years, who had spent all her livelihood on physicians and could not be healed by any,
Luk 8:44 came from behind and touched the border of His garment. And immediately her flow of blood stopped.
Luk 8:45 And Jesus said, "Who touched Me?" When all denied it, Peter and those with him said, "Master, the multitudes throng and press You, and You say, 'Who touched Me?' "

Yes. That wasn't a rhetorical question. Her faith drew that power from Him without His knowledge it was going to happen. There's some good teaching in that passage. :)
