Should We Use Eugene Peterson's The Message?

I recognize The Message for what it is, with all its strengths and weaknesses. This week's controversy has not changed that.

In the aftermath of Eugene Peterson's controversial remarks about homosexuality, followed by his retraction, many have asked me if they should still use The Message. My answer remains the same today as it has always been: The Message is not a translation and should not be used as your primary Bible. However, as a very free paraphrase, it is sometimes powerful and brilliant while at other times it is seriously off target....

...But, to repeat: It should never be used as your primary Bible
, since it is not a translation of the Bible but rather a free paraphrase of the Bible. And whenever I see people carrying The Message into church services, I groan, since I assume that, for those people, it is their Bible.

Use it, then, in a supplemental way and, where it really nails things or clarifies things, learn from it. But use it with caution: It is, by design, a very free paraphrase.

In sum, my view today of The Message is the same as it has been for years, unchanged by the controversial events of this week. I appreciate the years of effort that were put into it, and I recognize it for what it is, with all its great strengths and great weaknesses.

For a fair assessment of Dr. Peterson's comments and retraction this week, see Bill Muehlenberg's article here.(URL link)
And that is exactly how I use it, particularly during Bible study in my Prayer groups.

I had an early copy of the Message that didn't have the verse numberings. I didn't care for that as it made it hard to look something up if I wanted to see what the Message said. I gave it away.

I have a habit of buying many Bible versions, and not using them. I always go back to KJV or NIV. When I decide I have too many, I give them to a church owned thrift store. They generally end up in the hands of a man who collects them for his church to send to Africa. I feel they go to a good cause. I never buy expensive copies.

If you use it at a Bible Study, it is actually not a Bible Study. I would walk out.

I bought the Peterson translation some years ago when it first came out. I eventually put it in the trash can. I'm not knocking a paraphrase edition. I still have my living Bible that I bought when I first got saved some 30 yrs ago. Maybe I'm not up to tee, or just a little old fashioned, but the Message Bible is trash. Just my personal opinion, and I'm not coming down on anyone who uses Mr. Peterson's Bible.

I like the NKJV and NASB, when speaking of English translations.

So do I, I use both. I also enjoy the Amplified Bible for an even more in depth meaning.

Those two are my go to versions as well..I rarely go to any others..except occasionally the Amplified..

I use Amplified for clarification sometimes, but don't care for it for general reading as I get lost in the synonyms.

I've had The Message NT and the Psalms etc for years and hardly read them - I could use them starting a BBQ
