John 10:5
4 When he has brought out all who are his own, he goes on ahead of them, and his sheep follow him because they know his voice. 5 But they will never follow a stranger; in fact, they will flee from him because they do not recognize his voice." 6 Jesus spoke to them using this illustration, but they did not understand what He was telling them....
Does this passage mean a Christian will not follow a strange voice?
Yet we know that we have all done that at some point in our Christian walk....
I wonder if some interpret this to give them a false sense of security?

The immediate context is not Gentiles (he talks about them in verse 16), it's his sheep among the Jews. The ones that followed Abraham in his faith and would naturally receive him as their promised Messiah. They would naturally listen to their Messiah's voice and not to false teachers. Some of them took offense at him and rejected both him and their Abrahamitic faith in the process though.

We are His sheep. As long as you are listening to him we will not follow another. However, most of us listen to Him but mostly we listen to our own voice.
