    Abraham, Isaac, Jacob

Let's see what scripture has to say about them being pictures of something else.

Heb 11:17 By faith Abraham, when he was tested, offered up Isaac, and he who had received the promises offered up his only begotten son,
18 of whom it was said, “In Isaac your seed shall be called,”
19 concluding that God was able to raise him up, even from the dead, from which he also received him in a figurative sense.

The last verse contains information that isn't found in the OT. Given verse 19 the account becomes very similar to the gospel where God, the Son obeys God, the Father in becoming a sacrifice for mankind, and gives himself to die in faith that God, the Father will raise him up from the dead again. In Abraham's case God intervenes and replaces Isaac with a lamb and we know that Jesus is represented by a lamb both in terms of OT symbolism and also in the book of Revelation. So Abraham and Isaac become pictures of the Father and the Son.

What about the Holy Spirit ? It's tempting to add the Holy Spirit and arrive at the complete Godhead. Abraham, Isaac and Jacob are often mentioned in the same breath in the Bible so why not Jacob as the Holy Spirit ? The problem is that the Holy Spirit is not the son of Jesus. Nor is he the son of the Father. But what does the NT say about Jacob ? The passage where Jacob is discussed as a picture of NT realities is found in Romans 9 :

6 But it is not that the word of God has taken no effect. For they are not all Israel who are of Israel,
7 nor are they all children because they are the seed of Abraham; but, “In Isaac your seed shall be called.”
8 That is, those who are the children of the flesh, these are not the children of God; but the children of the promise are counted as the seed.
9 For this is the word of promise: “At this time I will come and Sarah shall have a son.”
10 And not only this, but when Rebecca also had conceived by one man, even by our father Isaac
11 (for the children not yet being born, nor having done any good or evil, that the purpose of God according to election might stand, not of works but of Him who calls),
12 it was said to her, “The older shall serve the younger.”
13 As it is written, “Jacob I have loved, but Esau I have hated.”

We see the same thing in Galatians where Ishmael is the firstborn of Abraham but Isaac is the one born according to the promise, representing that which is born according to God and not just according to the flesh. In NT terms, Jesus was born according to God, all flesh is not but those who are born of the Spirit in the likeness of Jesus are counted as his brothers and coheirs of the promise.

Likewise Esau was the firstborn of Isaac according to the flesh but he despised his birthright and by trickery Jacob received that birthright instead and was the one who found favor both with Isaac and according to Romans 9, with God. Jacob is again a picture of those who are born of God according to promise rather than according to the flesh. Not born by the will of man, not by blood but born of God as John 1 talks about.

Jesus was the firstborn of God but who is the Holy Spirit the firstborn of ? Noone. Jesus' true heirs, those who are born again in his likeness, become part of his lineage, coheirs of the promise. The multitude of the children of Israel. Not those simply born of Abraham according to the flesh (9:6) like Ishmael and Esau were but the children according to the promise. True followers of Abraham. Which includes us Gentiles who believe.

Gen 35:14 So Jacob set up a pillar in the place where He talked with him, a pillar of stone; and he poured a drink offering on it, and he poured oil on it.

Does Jacob represent the Holy Spirit since he poured oil on the pillar of stone ? Well Jesus is the one who baptizes people with the Holy Spirit and fire according to the NT and oil is a picture of the Holy Spirit so that picture doesn't work.

Jacob also had 12 sons, the 12 patriarchs that became the 12 tribes of Israel. How many gifts of the Spirit are listed in 1 Cor 12 ? Nine.

Buttering you up before I .......in love of course - Everything must be done in love

The comparison of the 9 gifts of the Spirit to the 12 sons of Jacob and since 9 does not equal 12 - therefore Jacob can't represent the Holy Spirit is faulty logic.
There are proper biblical ways to interpret scripture and you can't use that sort of analysis. Godly teachers who are gifted in these areas have proper skills at understanding how, when and why certain verses can or cannot be used to interpret a subject.

This is not my opinion but this comes from respected, spirit filled and lead people who are credible.

We know in Bible numerics 3 is the number of the Godhead/trinity

Jesus himself made reference to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob many times and linked them to kingdom of heaven. Three men who are the FOUNDATION of Israel and salvation of the world.

It is not Abraham, Isaac, and Rachel and it is not Abraham, Isaac, Jacob and Joseph. Why not include Joseph since he ended up doing greater things than his fathers.

Because 3 is the number of the trinity/godhead and these 3 patriarchs represent the godhead. Joseph is not linked to the trinity.

Look at the below verse and see how people will sit down and fellowship with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob in heaven. Heaven belongs to God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit and when we get to heaven we are now in their kingdom and we will fellowship with all 3

Matt 8:11 - And I say to you that many will come from east and west, and sit down with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven.

Jesus is also establishing the doctrine of the trinity/Godhead by his continual use and he uses 3 male patriarchs to signify this

Matt 22:32 - 'I AM THE GOD OF ABRAHAM, THE GOD OF ISAAC, AND THE GOD OF JACOB' ? God is not the God of the dead, but of the living."

Mark 12:26 - But concerning the dead, that they rise, have you not read in the book of Moses, in the burning bush passage, how God spoke to him, saying, 'I AM THE GOD OF ABRAHAM, THE GOD OF ISAAC, AND THE GOD OF JACOB' ?

Luke 13:28 - There will be weeping and gnashing of teeth, when you see Abraham and Isaac and Jacob and all the prophets in the kingdom of God, and yourselves thrust out.

Luke 20:37 - But even Moses showed in the burning bush passage that the dead are raised, when he called the Lord 'THE GOD OF ABRAHAM, THE GOD OF ISAAC, AND THE GOD OF JACOB.'

Acts 7:32 - saying, 'I AM THE GOD OF YOUR FATHERS—THE GOD OF ABRAHAM, THE GOD OF ISAAC, AND THE GOD OF JACOB.'

The reason why the Jews see themselves as descendants of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob is that Abraham is the one God first revealed himself to in a manner significant to the Jewish religion but the Jews as a tribe are only descendants of his grandson Jacob through his son Isaac. The worship of the God of Abraham continued through those two and then through the descendants of Jacob in general. In heaven they will want to fellowship with their three main patriarchs.
