I haven't studied it in quite a while but I thought there were no gaps in genealogies because they were used to place Adam as being created about 6 thousand years ago. Has anyone studied this lately?

If you compare the various genealogies in the Bible you will find that some omit entries that others include. One focuses on there being 3x14 generations and omits a number of kings, probably that he found too ungodly to bother to mention. So one entry becomes the forefather rather than the actual father of the next one. The Bible often talks about "the fathers" when it means forefathers. How this works with the oldest genealogies we don't know but going merely as far back as the Israelites being in Egypt we see only a few generations being listed in a space of four hundred years and a population increase from hundreds to millions which necessitates that more generations were omitted than included. The feeling I get from reading the Bible is that the history from 1 Samuel (Saul, David) and on seems fairly thorough but it gets more and more sketchy going back in time from that point. Before Abraham anything may be possible.

I don't necessarily believe in all the theories on time and the Bible but here is a list :

    1) The gap theory. There is a time gap of uncertain length between the creation and reforming of the Earth at the beginning of Genesis 1. Demons had physical bodies before the reforming of the Earth.

I don't discount the theory but it seems extremely technical in its alleged connection to scripture so it is obscure per default.

    2) The creation days are ages of uncertain length.

I believe in that one because it can be substantiated from Hebrews 3-4 where the seventh day was replaced by the day of salvation with the resurrection of Christ and that day will be replaced by the day of judgment etc later.

    3) The genealogies have huge gaps or are representative, mentioning interesting patriarchs during the early stages and omitting the others. They get more complete as time passes.

Even the genealogies given in the gospels are incomplete when comparing them to each other. The only question is to which degree they are incomplete when going back towards the beginning and if this stretches the time frame significantly. The situation with the 400 years in Egypt as mentioned above suggests that the genealogies are highly unreliable when trying to assess the time frame involved. If one assumes that it gets even worse before Abraham then most things are possible. Including the 200,000 year age of the mithocondrial Eve as the genetical mother of us all, as calculated by scientists about 20 years ago.
