    Hezekaiah's healing..works or faith?

In a discussion last week a brother inserted the concept that Hezekiah was healed because of his works. Essentially he was stating that he believed that God will heal those with fruit even if faith is not present.

When one reads 2 Kings 20: 1-11 you get that impression..

How does faith play into this story; or does it?

I gave an answer but would love to have some input from some of you..

I just just see it as his prayer was based on things that bolstered his faith when he turned to God. But then again, the Bible does say let us come reason together. Reasoning with the Lord in prayer. I've heard Hagin talk about getting a healing for someone based on a similar type prayer. But I think it's more the faith generated in the prayer that the person was praying basing the prayer on 'works' if that makes sense. I think it's just an aid to the person's faith to pray that way. Basing it on those things bolstered their faith.

My response was that faith without works is dead so faith produces obedience...what Hezekiah was stating was the fruit of faith I would think.

God already KNEW Hezekiah's works though so we know, as you stated, he was reiterating them to God...

I understand that without faith we cannot please God..

What seems to be the issue is the expectation of Hezekiah's heart...did he believe God was going to heal him based on reminding Him of his list? It sounds like it

Seems this is one of those passages one cannot interpret alone to get the truth..

Also, I wonder why God chose to use the sundial of Ahaz steps..Ahaz was an evil king and Hezekiah's father..so I wonder if there is significance in this choice of a 'sign'.

Aha! Well a sort of aha...the sign bolstered his faith and his healing came in three days if I recall...

But yet, Hezekiah asked for a sign...

I don't think there was much faith operating in the Old Testament except among those who had a very particular revelation of God and who were anointed with his Holy Spirit. More likely Hezekiah prayed then God sent Isaiah who produced a sign by the anointing and then the corresponding healing. Maybe Hezekiah believed after he saw the sign, it doesn't tell. But there was no message on inheriting God's various promises by faith in the Old Testament, just a general call to believe God. Let's not read the OT as if the new covenant was already revealed at that time, it was not.

What about Hebrews 11? And we are told to follow the faith of Abraham. So they could and did exercise faith like we did. Obviously it was not directed toward a NT revelation, but directed toward God nonetheless.

The faith heroes ? They had specific revelations of and from God, they were anointed with his Holy Spirit. They didn't have promises that were universally available by faith like we have. A lot of the miracles that took place were worked by such faith heroes but didn't involve the faith of the recipient, it was just raw power. The healing of Naaman, the commander of the Syrian army for instance, he decided to obey the instruction of the prophet simply because it was an easy thing to do and he had already travelled a long way to meet that prophet.

The faith heroes were specific, there weren't that many of them among millions of Israelites. King Hezekiah isn't among them.

True..so you believe Hezekiah was healed by Isaiah's faith?

Do you think there is a message in the fact that God chose the steps of Ahaz as the sign for his son?

So was Hezekiah healed by Isaiah's faith?

God said, I heard your prayer and saw your teas and will heal you...
