Thread: Levels and classes of Sin ~

Levels and classes of Sin ~

My Catholic friends growing up would tell me the difference between mortal and venial sins. I thought it strange that they had a class or level of sin for every one that was committed. Are some sins worse than others. I remember the ole Pentecostal preacher saying, "sin is sin, it will all send you to hell !" I think some sins do the job a little faster but they all poison you.

The catholics are onto something, that some sins will kill faith and relationship faster but its really about the catholic need for absolution. If every sin required absolution or else the person goes to hell then that would be too much to cope with. So they create some categories.

All sins condemn man to hell but some sins are worse in their practical application on earth

It's hypocritical to pretend we treat all sins the same.....For example how many christians would let ex pedophiles run the children's ministry

Reminds of when one Christian asked the other, "Can a Christian smoke cigarettes and still go to heaven?"
The other one replied, "Sure. You'll even get there faster."

Are there different levels of punishment for different levels of sin?

Yes, In the Old Testament some sins were death penalty sins and most were not.

    Matthew 11
21 Woe unto thee, Chorazin! woe unto thee, Bethsaida! for if the mighty works, which were done in you, had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes.
22 But I say unto you, It shall be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon at the day of judgment, than for you.
23 And thou, Capernaum, which art exalted unto heaven, shalt be brought down to hell: for if the mighty works, which have been done in thee, had been done in Sodom, it would have remained until this day.
24 But I say unto you, That it shall be more tolerable for the land of Sodom in the day of judgment, than for thee.

    This one also...

    John 19:11
Jesus answered, Thou couldest have no power at all against me, except it were given thee from above: therefore he that delivered me unto thee hath the greater sin.

This I say therefore, and testify in the Lord, that ye henceforth walk not as other Gentiles walk, in the vanity (futility) of their mind, having the understanding darkened...
    (Ephesians 4:17-18)

Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly...
    (Psalm 1)
