The Adversary, and Not God, Brings Adversity

The Adversary, and Not God, Brings Adversity

Most of my readers are aware of my habit of searching through different English translations to get a better understanding of a Bible passage's meaning. While doing a study on Isaiah 63:9, I found several translations of it that was very interesting. The first of these that I will cite is E. W. Bullinger:

In all their adversity, He was no adversary, and the angel of His presence saved them: in His love and in His pity He redeemed them; and He bare them, and carried them all the days of old. (Isaiah 63:9; E. W. Bullinger Companion Bible)

What does that mean? It means that since God was not Israel's adversary, He was not the source of their adversity. On the contrary, God sent His angel to save them from their adversity.

Here are a few more translations that agree...

    Isaiah 63:9 (CLV)
in all their distress He is not a foe, not an agent or a messenger, but His presence saved them. In His love, and by His sparing, He, He redeems them, and He will transport and assist them all the days of the eon."

    Isaiah 63:9 (LITV)
In all their affliction, He was not a foe; and the Angel of his Face saved them. In His love and in His pity He redeemed them. And He bore them up, and lifted them up all the days of old.

    Isaiah 63:9 (LSV)
In all their distress [He is] no adversary, || And the Messenger of His Presence saved them, || In His love and in His pity He redeemed them, || And He lifts them up, || And carries them all the days of old.

    Isaiah 63:9 (YLT)
In all their distress He is no adversary, And the messenger of His presence saved them, In His love and in His pity He redeemed them, And He doth lift them up, And beareth them all the days of old.

This I say therefore, and testify in the Lord, that ye henceforth walk not as other Gentiles walk, in the vanity (futility) of their mind, having the understanding darkened...
    (Ephesians 4:17-18)

Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly...
    (Psalm 1)

    AWESOME!

I bet if we do more digging through the Old Testament using alternative translations (i.e., other than the KJV), I bet we will find more passages that vindicate God.
