New NFL policy: Teams to be fined if players kneel during anthem
-The NFL announced Wednesday that all players who are on the field when the national anthem is heard before a game must stand — or they can choose to remain in the locker room without penalty.
The league's teams agreed unanimously to the new policy during a spring meeting in Atlanta, and they will be subject to a fine if a player disobeys, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said at a news conference.
While the move is in response to dozens of players over the past year kneeling as a form of protest over social justice issues, the guidelines aren't specific about what constitutes a sign of disrespect directed toward the anthem. The fine amount was also unclear.
"All 32 clubs want to make sure that during the moment of the anthem and the flag, that that is a very important moment for a lot of us as a league, as clubs and (for) our country, and it's a moment we want to make sure is done in a respectful fashion," Goodell said.
It was unfortunate that on-field protests created a false perception among many that thousands of NFL players were unpatriotic. This is not and was never the case," the league also said in a statement announcing the new policy.
The union representing players lashed out at the league's decision, tweeting that it had not been consulted about the rule change...

So now instead of the media making a story out of who kneeled every week now they make a story every week about who stayed in. That's how they keep it alive.

Most are pretty sure that this new policy only came about because the NFL was losing money over the kneeling protests, viewership was down 10% last season...so if a lot of players don't come out during the anthem the NFL will still have a mess to deal with.

So this shows how ineffective this will really be. First of all it's the team that's fined, not the player if they still do it:
If a player protests on the field, his team, not the player, will be fined by the league. It will be up to the individual team whether to fine or punish a player. But let’s be real -- that’s never going to happen. The owner and, by association, that team’s front office, would be ostracized by every free agent in the league.
And then you have this:
Report: Jets owner says team will pay fines if players violate new anthem policy

The only way to deter it under the new rule would have been to hit the individual player with a huge fine that really would hurt the pocket book. Most of what they fine players for stuff is chump changed compared to what they make.

I thought they should fine the players too, however, I'm sure some civil rights attorney would say that penalizing them would be a "free speech" violation or something to that effect.

This problem will not go away. Frankly, I’m surprised MLB isnt having the same difficulties.

The NBA has a policy that the players have to stand for the anthem and they don't seem to have a problem with it.

I wonder what the penalties are if violated?
