Yesterday I passed a sea gull lying at the side of the road. It was in a position as if nesting, a few inches from the line in the side of the road. It was looking straight at my car which was seemingly hurling towards it but it didn't try to move. I suppose it was sick or dying. As I was about to pass it and it must have thought I was going to crash into it, I could feel a strong emotion of fear coming from it. It must have been purely emotion because it was doing absolutely nothing except sit there with its head held high enough to watch its surroundings. It didn't feel like it was a human being. I have sensed things like that previously but this was sudden, strong and clear. I wasn't confused by my own emotions because I knew full well that the car would pass it without hitting it, and there was noone else in the car or along the road. It seems clear that animals have souls, they aren't just lumps of flesh. That doesn't make them spiritual like human beings but the soul may well keep existing after they die and then return to God who created it. Who knows what he does with it but I suppose he could simply breathe the soul into a new body.
