Philadelphia man, neighborhood mob beats carjacker to death after suspect takes off with 3 kids

A sudden outburst of mob justice Thursday night in Philadelphia ended with a carjacker dead and a 25-year-old man being questioned by police Friday after the thief's attempt to snatch a running vehicle -- with the man's children inside -- reportedly went awry.

Officials said an unidentified 25-year-old woman was traveling with her three children Thursday when she stopped outside a pizza shop on 29th and Dauphin St. at about 9 p.m. to visit her boyfriend, who worked at the pizzeria, according to WCAU.

When she went inside, the woman reportedly left her car running with her three children -- a 7-month-old, a 1-year-old and a 5-year-old -- inside.

That's when police say a 54-year-old man entered the car and took off.

Investigators say the boyfriend, who is the father of two of the children, chased the suspect on foot and was able to catch up to the car when it got stuck in traffic.

The boyfriend, also 25, pulled the suspect from the car and a short foot chase ensued, Philadelphia Police Chief Inspector Scott Small told WPVI.

"He fled on foot about a half a block. And the boyfriend caught up to him and there was some sort of physical struggle that ensued," Small said. "Then other males from the neighborhood intervened and began punching and kicking the male who took the vehicle."

About an hour after the carjacking occurred, emergency services arrived on the scene and found the carjacker unconscious, WCAU reported. He was taken to Temple University Hospital and pronounced dead.

The mother and father were taken in for questioning and police say they're cooperating. Authorities have not said if charges will be filed, a decision the District Attorney's Office will make.

I mean you just murdered a man. It wasn't in self defense, etc. I mean I don't agree with what he did, but you can't just kill him.

It reminds me of when people in the US shoot trespassers including burglars and they are acquitted.

The “deadly force” issue will be the problem. They will need witnesses to come forward. Trying to draw the line will be up to the lawyers and prosecutor.

That aside, I applaud this effort in rescuing the children in a very dangerous scenario but will also admit this is not necessarily a good sign. Will vigilanty-ism be on the rise? What’s next? Lynch mobs?

This is the stuff we were trained in and continuing to study. In Michigan CPL and Advanced courses this is all very relevant to our day. In Michigan with “stand your ground” laws that perp could have been shot dead on the scene for endangering lives of children.

The mom should receive some discipline for leaving the car running with children inside.

Well just trespassing, sure. Like on my property. But you break into my house, inside my 'sanctuary', all bets are off. And I'll be totally justified.

True. I mean people get charged all the time for leaving kids in a car. Just because you left it running and had the intention of coming right back, no difference. I'm sure that will be lost in the whole matter now.

Probably in cases where the invader is heading for the door and shot running away. The danger to anyone in the home is passed and deadly force is taken. Not a justifiable shooting if they are running away.

I’m sure they didn’t mean too.
