The Jolt: Donald Trump joins Democratic effort to discourage a Home Depot boycott

Last night, President Donald Trump chose to side with Georgia Democrats who have spent the last 72 hours trying to tamp down talk of a boycott of Atlanta-based Home Depot.

No, really. That's what happened. The episode started with an AJC report that Home Depot co-founder Bernie Marcus had decided to give away most of his fortune -- and that some of that cash would go to Trump's re-election effort. Offended liberals began spreading an ominous hashtag: #boycotthomedepot. But anyone who knows anything about Georgia politics knows that Home Depot philanthropy is quite bipartisan.

Late Monday night, state Sen. Elena Parent, D-Atlanta, countered with her own Twitter message, pointing out that the company's other co-founder, Arthur Blank, is a Democrat who donated to Hillary Clinton's presidential campaign and other down-ticket races. "It's not all so cut and dried. So do your research before you #BoycottHomeDepot," she wrote. On Tuesday morning, Stacey Evans, a 2018 gubernatorial contender, offered an amen. Evans' Twitter message:

"Not everything is about politics. 1000s of Georgians put food on the table bc of jobs at @HomeDepot and many cmmy orgs benefit from the the co's generosity. Knee jerk reactions are out of control, y'all!"

So Trump was somewhat late to the game when he Tweeted the following last night:

A truly great, patriotic & charitable man, Bernie Marcus, the co-founder of Home Depot who, at the age of 90, is coming under attack by the Radical Left Democrats with one of their often used weapons. They don't want people to shop at those GREAT stores because he contributed....

    Followed by this:

....to your favorite President, me! These people are vicious and totally crazed, but remember, there are far more great people ("Deplorables") in this country, than bad. Do to them what they do to you. Fight for Bernie Marcus and Home Depot!

Trump made no mention of Blank.Clearly, it won't do for both Republicans and Democrats to defend Home Depot from a boycott. That wouldn't make sense. So here's what we'll do: Bernie Marcus supporters will patronize everything from the nuts-and-bolts aisle to pressure-treated lumber. Support for Arthur Blank will be confined to the power tool aisle west to the home-and-garden section. Everyone agree?

I always preferred Lowes over Home Depot because of Home Depot's open support for gay pride stuff. Lowes, on the other hand (as far as I know) have stayed out of political issues. But I appreciate how Bernie Marcus over the past months has been supporting Trump and criticizing the dem push towards socialism.

Because that's exactly what it's designed to do, to get him to make an announcement that he isn't going to do it.

    His statement is great:

I woke up this morning thinking it was going to be another great day. I've been celebrating with friends, family and the community since I turned 90. I've told you about the gracious gift of $117 million that was collected and given in my honor to four charities that mean a lot to me. All that happiness blew up because I said in a newspaper interview that I have supported and will continue to support Donald Trump.

    Boom!

Negative stories... vicious threats, without cause, to boycott the company that has enabled my foundation to give billions to support autism, medical research, education, heart and neurological issues like stroke, and to help our veterans. The company that I retired from in 2002 and have not had a business relationship with in almost 20 years. A company that has employed more than a half-million people. The people who work there are affiliated with both political parties or no party at all. They are of all religions and all colors and backgrounds. Why would people want to hurt them?

All because I give my voice and some of my money to our President. Am I in China? Argentina? Russia? That's what it feels like to me.

It saddens me that our country has come to this, where I, as a private citizen, cannot express my feelings. It angers me and it saddens me, but it sure as hell is not going to stop me. If you thought it would, you've got the wrong guy.

In the next ten years, God willing, I will accomplish more to save this world than my critics will do even if they had forty lifetimes.

Boom!!! (that's my boom on that last statement).

I recently banned Lowes after being almost forcibly herded into the self service checkout. I had several items that were marked down but had no bar code (paint samples) so of course the self checkout failed and the tender of that process who has to intervene to void was all passive/aggresive about getting over and fixing things so by the time she got there I decided to just leave all the items, about 20 of them and walk out.

What really triggered that was while using the self checkout screens I spotted a notice that the transaction was being video recorded. After leaving the store I decided to go ask the manager who gave them the authority to collect and store my facial recognition data and why wasn't there an opt-out and why there wasn't a full disclosure PRIOR to using self-checkout. I also asked her if they had a data sharing policy available so I could find out what they were doing with my face. Anyway, I'll never set foot in there again. It's a surveillance operation, you are being sold.

Home Depot is closer to us than Lowe’s. Unfortunately ACE just doesn’t have enough stuff.

Home Depot And Lowe's Accused Of Scanning Millions Of Customers Faces

On Sept. 4, 2019, a group of plaintiffs simultaneously filed virtually identical class action complaints in Cook County Circuit Court in Chicago against Lowe’s and in federal court in Atlanta against Home Depot, accusing the retailers of violating the Illinois state law by “surreptitiously” scanning customers’ faces as they moved about the chains’ stores.

According to the Lowe's lawsuit, home improvement stores are secretly using facial recognition to identify everyone.

“Lowe’s has augmented its in-store security cameras with software that tracks individuals’ movements throughout the store using a unique scan of face geometry. Put simply, Defendants surreptitiously attempt to collect the faceprint of every person who appears in front of one of their facial-recognition cameras.” (To find out more about Home Depot tracking customers, click here.)

The Home Depot and the Lowe's cases claim that they have failed to inform customers that their biometric data is being collected, and did not obtain written consent for doing so. Home Depot and Lowe's have also neglected to post a publicly available retention schedule detailing when the data will be destroyed.

According to the Lowe's class action, "defendants actively conceal their faceprinting practices from the public."
