Ross Perot, eccentric billionaire who made two independent runs for president, dies at 89

    H. Ross Perot, an eccentric Dallas billionaire whose two independent runs for president in the 1990s tapped into voters' frustration with the major political parties and foreshadowed the rise of the tea party two decades later, died July 9 at his home in Dallas. He was 89.

The family announced the death in a statement but did not provide a cause.

The son of a politically connected cotton broker, Mr. Perot followed a long tradition of buccaneering Texas entrepreneurs. Following an unhappy stint in the peacetime Navy of the 1950s, he became a top salesman at IBM and was such an exhaustive peddler of computer hardware that he once met an annual sales quota in less than three weeks.

Mr. Perot went into business for himself in 1962 and made a fortune twice over, starting two software companies that each sold for billions of dollars. He received national attention for showering his largesse on efforts to aid or free U.S. hostages in conflict zones from Vietnam to Lebanon...

Perot believed in patriotism and loyalty to his employees.

Would have made a good President. He accurately predicted the massive loss of jobs after the passage of NAFTA.

I was actually going to vote for this man when he was the third choice between a Clinton and a Bush presidency. But due to his dropping out and showing some instability I ended up voting for Bush, Sr. (my first time voting Republican as I had left the Dem plantation a few years before that after discovering how contrary the dem values were to Biblical values).

He might have won if he hadn't flaked out. All he succeeded in doing was helping Bill Clinton get elected by taking votes away from Bush. He was Trump before Trump. But no social media then and he would have had a more 'peaceful' presidency.

Ross Perot echoed populist sentiments 25 years before rise of Trump, presidential historian says
    By Charles Creitz

Billionaire businessman and 1992 independent presidential candidate Ross Perot may have been President Trump's predecessor in terms of offering a populist, anti-establishment message to voters, according to a presidential historian.

Perot, who died Tuesday at age 89, also was not the spoiler in the election that figures in the George H.W. Bush re-election campaign made him out to be, Craig Shirley claimed on "The Ingraham Angle."

"There's always been a populist strain in American politics," Shirley said, calling Perot "prescient" regarding comments he made about NAFTA....

....In another clip played by host Laura Ingraham, Perot said America, "cannot be the policeman of the world any longer."

"We spend $300 billion a year defending the world. Germany and Japan spent around $30 billion apiece."

In his interview, Shirley added Bush's loss to then-Arkansas Gov. Bill Clinton was not because Perot entered the race and took part in the debates.

"Bush lost the election because he gave up the ghost on the Reagan revolution," he said, adding a late Republican pollster once told him the Perot vote appeared to come, "proportionally from Bush and Clinton -- Clinton still would have won [without Perot]."

He said there were voters in both parties who did not want to vote for either major party candidate, calling claims of Perot playing spoiler "a myth."....

This I say therefore, and testify in the Lord, that ye henceforth walk not as other Gentiles walk, in the vanity (futility) of their mind, having the understanding darkened...
    (Ephesians 4:17-18)

Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly...
    (Psalm 1)

In his interview, Shirley added Bush's loss to then-Arkansas Gov. Bill Clinton was not because Perot entered the race and took part in the debates.
    An opposing viewpoint:

What if Perot had not waged an independent candidacy that captured 18.9 percent of the vote in 1992?

There's a good chance that there never would have been a Clinton presidency. The question of whether Perot took more votes from Bill Clinton or George H.W. Bush spurred endless and imponderable postelection analysis among pollsters and political scientists. There wasn't much doubt, however, among operatives close to both candidates over who the beneficiary was and the real-world effect. Perot, who loathed Bush, amplified Clinton's criticism of the GOP incumbent, and at important junctures spoke approvingly of Clinton and his running mate, Al Gore. He gave conservative-leaning swing voters who didn't like Bush a safe alternative to Clinton.
