This is what happens when the church buries their heads in the sand because a teaching from the bible seems "uncomfortable" or "unseemly" for them to digest.
He probably also never experienced a relationship with and baptism in the Holy Spirit. More than likely his faith was based on cessationist teaching and he didn't have the communion. He knew about God but didn't know Him.
This is the same reason I believe that we need to get our youth saved and full of the Holy Spirit before they go running off to college. It is not so easy for liberal professors to rob them of an actual relationship with the Holy Spirit.
