    What is suffering?

I think suffering comes from two sources.
The first is to suffer for Jesus.
The second is to suffer from our own mistakes.
Any comments on suffering will be appreciated.

And a lot of it comes from living in a fallen world.

    Agree to both.

And many Christians need to know that we do not have to suffer what we’ve been redeemed from, and not to equate that with ‘suffering for Jesus’.

Yes, I have heard some Christians say that some form of sickness or lack and going without (which could be a broad spectrum of things) relates to suffering (for Jesus).
Then again, there is sowing and reaping which will produce a harvest of blessing or lack, sickness or health. And if the negative prospect comes to pass, it has been equated to suffering.
But in reality, it is the result of making wrong decisions or walking in disobedience to godly principles and spiritual laws.
Abraham and Sarah took matters into their own hands and the result backfired as they suffered the consequences of their bad decision.
Even today, when believers are doing their own thing, there will be suffering.
There are times when a Christian must refuse government law (Rm 13:1-8) if it goes against the word of God.
Such as Daniel refusing to stop praying and the three Hebrew children refusing to bow down to the idol which led to suffering.
Paul and the apostles refused to stop evangelizing which led to physical suffering.
At a future date when the Mark of the Beast is fully implemented, Christians will suffer the fate of martyrdom because they will refuse to take it.
These are some things I can think of that would lead me to believe this is genuine suffering (from a biblical standpoint).
Anyone got any more ideas or comments?

There is a suffering that comes from resisting sin. Having the same mind as Him which caused him to suffer.
1 Peter 4 King James Version (KJV)

    1 Forasmuch then as Christ hath suffered for us in the flesh, arm yourselves likewise with the same mind: for he that hath suffered in the flesh hath ceased from sin;

2 That he no longer should live the rest of his time in the flesh to the lusts of men, but to the will of God.

And suffering for the sake of the gospel, as opposed to suffering due to our own decisions, etc, as you said:

14 If ye be reproached for the name of Christ, happy are ye; for the spirit of glory and of God resteth upon you: on their part he is evil spoken of, but on your part he is glorified.

15 But let none of you suffer as a murderer, or as a thief, or as an evildoer, or as a busybody in other men's matters.

16 Yet if any man suffer as a Christian, let him not be ashamed; but let him glorify God on this behalf.

Verse 16 is the key: If any man suffers as a Christian. So there is such a thing as suffering as a Christian, meaning suffering that comes as a direct result of being a Christian: reproach, persecution, etc. Then other suffering that's due to our own decisions and just from living in a fallen world as FB said. These are NOT
    'suffering for Jesus'.
